Elyria as in Ohio??
You can try the newspaper, http://www.petfinder.com , the pound (not free, but not expensive either), The animal shelter has reasonable prices that include spay and neuter.
It depends on what animals you are looking for, but those places are your best bet.
You can even post a want ad in the newspaper for whatever it is you are looking for.
Keep in mind that just because the animal is free, you will still need money for vet bills, food and all that.

If you're wondering how to find a dog that doesn't cost anything, please check your local newspapers. Ask around; someone you know may know someone who's trying to find a new home for a beloved pet. Please remember that even if the dog costs you nothing to acquire, he or she will still need food, shots, vet visits, flea meds, etc, etc, etc. Be sure you can afford all these things before getting a pet who will be depending on you to give them.
