The most important thing about the pharaohs of Egypt was that their people believed they were gods--literally, truly gods. They had pretty much unlimited power over their subjects and their land. For the most part, their people would gladly follow them to the death. As for specifics, it would depend on which pharaoh. I would recommend researching Hapshetsut, one of the only female pharaohs known. She is a fascinating example of a strong woman in a "man's" job.
