I have an old laptop Win 98 SE. Recently I purchased a Memorex travel drive (Portable USB Drive) I uploaded the drivers from memorex website, but whenever I plug the USD portable drive into my laptop I receive an 'unknow device'. I click My Computer, Device manger, properties I only have two options to select from: General & Driver. Whenever I click 'Driver' it shows Microsoft
4-23-1999. So I click to update the driver. The computer always seaches for the micrsoft driver, not the drivers I just downloaded. To make matters worse, if I manual try to search for the drivers, in the folder I downloaded them. I receive a message that folder doesn't have any info for your driver. How can I get a work around this message? These are the drivers for the portable usb from the manufacters site.

As far as I know, Memorex USB drives are newly released. Windows 98 is already obsolete that manufacturers didn't include windows 98SE version of driver.

Try to get the manual search to point to a file with a .inf extension.

Make sure you have manually decompressed the file you downloaded from the manufacturer's site a you may be pointing the machine to the correct location in the file system but the machine may only be seeing a .zip or .exe file.

Also make sure you point the machine to the exact folder when you are telling it where the driver is. Win 98 is quite stupid in that it doesn't seem to 'drill' down the folder tree to look through all possible locations below the one you specified. Later versions of Windows do this.

The Microsoft driver you see is probably just a generic MS driver used to detect the device. It will not necessarily allow you to use the device.

Generally speaking you are up against it with Win 98 SE. Whilst in theory Win 95 had USB support, most manufacturers will not officially support it or Win 98. Some will not even support Win 98 SE. I hate to encourage the upgrade cycle but newer versions of windows do have better USB support than Win98 SE.

Sounds like you are almost on top of the problem as you've taken all the sensible steps. Keep persisting but in the end the device may just not work on Win98 SE.

Good luck.

Is that USB drive compatible with Win 98? The newer devices may only be compatible with 2000/XP
