most of them use stiff although they can use extra stiff - extra stiff shafts require that you swing fast all of the time so it basically eliminates the "feel" factor - most of them use stiff to give them the ability to make shots - some of them actually use regular flex on their wedges so they can feel the shot more and allow the club to do the work

Most PGA tour players use X stiff shafts in their irons and woods. X stiff shafts are for players with swing speeds in excess of 100 mph. X stiff shafts provide the best accuracy with high swing speeds. A regular shaft is more flexible and for those with slower swing speeds (women & seniors). By theory a regular shaft will hit the ball further due to the whipping of the shaft (when hit perfectly), but the whipping of the shaft also creates greater inaccuracy (because most shots are not hit perfectly).

Most tour pro swing hard and use an X Flex (between stiff ans XS extra stiff). Many pro use XS (extra stiff) for greater control. Not all player do that, some use regular flex shafts and many others use stiff or firm. It is all about the torque they generate and the control that is in their natural swing.

I think it's like drug, the more you use it the more you need it. These people are hitting lots of balls. Most of them use True Temper, with X flex (which is as hard as you can get). Some are using S300 which is very strong enough. I think Tiger Woods use water pipe (just kidding).
Go to the site below and it's quite interesting as different Pros are using different clubs with different Specs. Of course all of them are paid to use the equipments, but they have a say in shaping all these equipments as well. Tiger changed clubs many times from Mizuno MP14, 29 mixed, to Titleist 680, and Nike Blade. All were specially designed for and with him, except Mizuno, which was used during his younger days, and perhaps in the first masters he won. I have the MP 29 final edition as titleist bought the patient from Mizuno and produce 680 for Tiger after he signed up with them (funny though 680 doesn't look or feel anything close to MP29).
The site below is interesting as each month they interview one Tour Pro about what inside their bags.

Well it looks like you got alot of great answers. Stiff being the best choice, not sure about the water pipe, but no matter what type of shaft flex you use, remember you only touch the Grip. The only part of your body that comes in to contact with the club is your hands. So its not just the shaft flex its also the grip and
how often they regrip their clubs. Yes, Its Okay To Be Tacky! I regrip twice a year to insure I do not lose a grip on the game. The best grip tape I have found is Gorilla Grip Tape from StukOnTapes @ www.stukontapes.com.
It is simply the best tape on the market. Gorilla Grip is easy to work with and provides the ultimate gripping solution for all your grip need, be it the golf grip, tennis grip or even you fishing pole. Gorilla Grip comes in the standard sizes you already use.
.75" x 108' and 2.00" x 108' yes and its cost less than the others. I have seen some tapes on Ebay sell for 7.50 a roll plus shipping and handling. At stukontapes is half that price, and it performs better. So don't lose your GRIP! get StukOnTapes Gorilla Grip Tape with its superior gripping power that is created by it extremely hi-tak, hi sheer characteristics provided by the specially formulated adhesive system.
