The heating element (a big metal loop behind the drum) probably died. A friend of mine opened up her drier and was able to buy a new one and install it herself. Just go to http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/ and you should be able to find a new part specifically for your drier.

BTW, they have great customer service, so if you can't find the part on the site just give them a call.

Had this happen 4 times in one year. I paid 80 dollars each time to get it fixed. It was burnt out wires that caused each. The last repairman finally asked me why I was wasting all that money on fixing a 30 year old dryer. I decided the next time the wiring blew (just one month after the last time it was fixed) that I would do what he suggested, and bought a new one. So I learned that...

The heat quits because either some wires have burnt out, or the thermostat has gone. Either is a fairly expensive fix. It's just easier to buy new...and presumably you can get another 30 years out of it.

You will probably need a new dryer unless you can get someone to renovate your old one. I did and it cost only half the cost of a new dryer and at this time, I think it has already lasted longer than if I got a new one and it's still going strong.

If it's electric you probably need a new heating coil. They are not that expensive and relatively easy to install.
