I am a 50 year old male. My doctor told me to walk and stay away from too much starch, but that was about the extent of her "prescription."

I need more energy and I need to attain a higher level of fitness. ANY serious suggestions would be very appreciated.

I am sick and tired of being obese and out-of-shape!

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.

On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.

Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

Well usually as you get old your body begins to "set" into its permanent shape, but there are ways to change that. You can try getting a fitness instructor and have them help you with dieting and proper ways to exercise and not overlaod yourself. If you want to do this on your own without a fitness instructor you can just try eating healthier foods and watch for the calories and of course the starches, or try Trim Spa, i heard they have great results, just look into different types of weight loss programs and see what works best for you. There are some weight loss programs that supply you with food and everything like that. Hopefully i helped you a bit and goodluck!! :)

Doctors don't know alot about how to eat beyond the food pyramid. Talk to a registered Dietitian. He or she can tell you how to change your eating habits. I had a heart attack and triple bypass 5 years ago at the age of 41(I am a female). The people in Cardiac rehab set me up with a dietitian. It helped me alot. Start out slow on exercise, such as walking, and build from there. I have also found Prevention Magazine to be very helpful in terms of exercise and food choices. Good Luck! You can do it!!!

I would Google or other search and look for "overweight" "fitness" or anyother of the many words for what you want to find. It's really important now that you are motivated, not to fall for any of the advertisments for pills, drinks, crazy equipment or any other "quick fix" . There isn;t any! Some of that stuff has a weight loss effect, but is only temporary and is terrible for your body. A slow, natural change in your life style and eatings habits is the way to go, because it will stick with you for the rest of your life. If you get on a sensible eating plan eliminating junk food, complex sugars and anything greasy, you have a good chance of not only loosing weight, but getting healthy. Exercise is extremely important on a daily basis to not only get in shape and feel better physically, but it releases endorphins in the brain...an instant "feel good episode". You don't have to joiin a gym (unless desired) or buy anything special, to exercise. Any physical act you enjoy will be the best one, because if you enjoy it, you'll do it! Walk, bikeride, play golf, swim....anything you like....Just Do It !! Also it would be a good idea to look up and visit a neutritionist, who can get you started on a sensible eating plan. Remember to eat only medium servings of foods on your plate, and only one helping. Eat fruits, vegs, salads..anything in that group is low calorie, filling and good for your body. Drink lots of water to flush out toxins, keep you feeling full, and keep you hydrated. After awhile of living this way (modified to suit you) you will automatically feel energized and much more fit. Best wishes.!

Make sure you exercise (even if it's lightly) ...... maybe walking in the mornings, it helps a lot for the rest of the day you'll feel like a new man and watch what you eat depending on your health ask your doctor what types of foods are good for YOU. Since you have a slower metabolism now it'll probably take a while but day by day you'll feel better and better so YOU CAN DO IT!!!! Good Luck :P

Don't get overly concerned about your weight think more about being healthy and looking good.

Burn more calories than you eat. Take in about 2000 a day.

Cut your fat intake.

Eat three cups of fat free low cal yogurt a day (make sure it has live cultures in it).

Do 45-60 min. of aerobic exercise a day (preferably before you eat in the morning).

Do 40 min of weight training three times a week.

I lost 40 lbs in two months and have kept it off for two more months doing this. I also took my body fat % from 30% to 14%

Be Blessed

As strange as it sounds exercising is what gives you energy. The more you do it the more energy you will have. be sure to drink alot of water and try to stay away from fast food. Chicken, fish and vegetables like broccolli and spinach are good foods. Lean meats and complex carbs. Try eating 6 small meals a day along with your exercise routine. the more often you eat the quicker you metabolism works.

Try a vegetarian diet.
There is a great deal of fat in meat, and most vegetarians manage to stay slim, fit, and healthy.
Avoid processed and prepackaged food, and eat lots of fruit and fresh vegetables.
That will work for sure

eat lots off salads, and keep up the walking, if that does not do it for you eat what you eat now, but figure out what has a lot of starch and cut those dishes by half, and keep on walking.
