they get some combat trainning.. the USMC dosent have its own medical staff so the navy covers it.. its not very intencive but its enough to know how a squad and platoon functions.. the corpsman trains with his unit he's assigned to and deploys if they deploy, when not on deployment they spend their time at the sick bay or hospital doing what they trained for.. its a lot more physically intence than the navy regs.. sicne you have to be able to keep up with your marines and carry a good sized pack with med supplies in it

If you get stationed with the Marines or request a Marine unit, you will be trained as a combat Corpsman. If you are on ship, you will deploy when your ship deloys. Use to be 6 months at a time, but that was before we went to war. Could be more than that now.

First off the Answer # one is confusing terms. The Marine do not have medical personel. Navy medical specialists are called Corpsmen.

Now to your question.... Yes, Corpsmen receive basic land warfare training & are typically armed with a pistol. Qualified hospital corpsmen may be assigned the responsibility of independent duty aboard ships and submarines; Fleet Marine Force, Special Forces and Seabee units, and at isolated duty stations where no medical officer is available. This is a five-year program.

What They Do:

The duties performed by HMs include: assisting in the prevention and treatment of disease and injuries; preparing/administering medications including injections; caring for the sick and injured; administering immunization programs; rendering emergency medical treatment; instructing sailors and marines in first aid, self aid and personal hygiene procedures; transporting the sick and injured; conducting preliminary physical examinations; performing medical administrative, supply and accounting procedures; maintaining treatment records and reports; supervising shipboard and field environmental sanitation and preventive medicine programs; supervising air, water, food and habitability standards.

Qualified technicians: perform clinical laboratory tests and operate sophisticated laboratory equipment; take and process X-rays and operate X-ray equipment; fill prescriptions, maintain pharmacy stock; serve as operating room technicians for general and specialized surgery; do preventive maintenance and repairs on biomedical equipment; operate sophisticated medical diagnostic treatment equipment. Includes kidney dialysis machines, radiation monitors, hearing and vision testing machinery, heart and lung test apparatus, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and CT scan equipment.

If you are male, expect to go Fleet Marine Force and attend FMSS. you will learn the basics of combat and field training in addition to your regular duties as a corpsman.

Like everyone else, they get a small amount of combat training. Corpsman are usually found on hospital ships, aircraft carriers, and usually one independent corpsman on small ships and subs.

the medics attached to the marine units are selected from volunteers unless there is not enough then they will be assigned. the are assigned to ship and have different nec's (naval enlisted codes). on larger ships you could be an operation room technician or xray tech. on smaller ships you could be the only person they see. they also serve on land base hospitals also.

Most HM's go to FMSS at either Camp Pendleton or Camp Lejeune. It's really a lot of fun. Being a "doc" in FMF is actually very rewarding. I went to FMSS at Lejeune and stationed at Pendleton. My best four years in the military.

The Marines don't have their own medics so all the Marine medics are Navy corpsmen.

So if you want to--go for it.
