You answered your own question about hitchhiking and it's right on the money -- it's bad. Flying is better and depending on where you're coming from Southwest has some great fares to Chicago. As far as Pete, no, don't have his address....you might write to his record label to see if any way to meet him.
I'm thinking that it's probably pretty unlikely. Chicago is a great city to visit and has so much to offer. It's worth a trip all on it's own with or without seeing Pete.
I'd make sure though to let your parents know how to keep in contact with you. Hotels in downtown Chicago are pretty expensive so be sure to have enough $$ for the trip.
Good luck!

Hitchhiking is a bad idea. Once you get into a car, you are at the driver's mercy. Get a plane ticket if you want to travel.
Chicago is a big place. I don't know what Pete's address is. I suggest you communicate with him before you travel. He could pick you up from the airport.

DO NOT hitchhike. You never know who will pick you up. A lot of women and men get hurt or killed by weirdos who pick them up. If you have the money, fly or take a train. Besides, who wants to stand out in the weather holding up your thumb hoping someone will pick you up. And what if they have to leave you in some dump of a place? I say no to hitchhiking!
Sorry, I don't know Pete.

sorry to disappoint you b/c I don't have pete's address but I don't think hitchhiking is safe at all and Pete wouldn't want you to go that far just take a plane...

well! first of all, the whole pete wentz thing is beyond me so i'm not even going to comment. but hitchhiking is fine, or at least it has been for me. i've been hitchhiking around for about four years now, with friends or by myself. it's free and kinda fun but i have run into my share of psychos. if youre even considering it, you must take a sort of weapon with you like a switchblade or mace or something. dont even think about going unprepared.
it's illegal in most states, i think all of them actually, and if you're caught looking for a ride by a cop or something you'll be taken to jail.
i don't care what people say, i hitchhike all the time and no one's ever tried to kill me. kidnap me- sure, put the moves on me- of course, but i have yet to come across a serial killer.
this isn't a lifetime movie.
you just have to be ready for a situation in which you have to defend yourself and think fast, otherwise i dont see the problem.
just be smart, try to go with an elderly person or someone of your same sex, dont have your boobs hanging out of your shirt and be cautious and you should be fine. good luck!

I know that in some states and cities the police and some citizens are not very comfortable with hitchhiking. So, I would at least take that into consideration.
