What kind of behavioral issues? If he is aggressive, you can't pass your problem on to someone else. Nobody else wants a dog that bites either. "Behavioral issues" is the number one killer of dogs.

Otherwise, your best bet is to try to get him into Dachshund Rescue. If you Google the term you will get lots of hits. These people are very familiar with dachshies and what kind of homes they need. They screen new homes very carefully.

If you give him to someone else, you are just making it someone Else's problem. If the issue is biting then you could be liable.

On average, of every 10 dogs that collectively go into American shelters, 1 to 2 get adopted. That means that 8 to 9 dogs get euthanized, and a lot of those dogs don't have behavioral problems.

What I am telling you is a hard and ugly truth, but it is the truth. I am not going to blow sunshine up you skirt because pretending that this problem isn't there is what fuels it. The other fuel is that MILLIONS of people every year don't face the truth about the dogs that they own and just make them other peoples problems.

This is not meant to be cruel... not at all. But I am an Animal Services officer and I am faced EVERY DAY with the irresponsibility of people towards their pets, and I have to clean up the mess... and I hate it.

And PLEASE don't buy into the lie that "No-Kill" shelters are humane. Could you imagine being locked up in a cage for the REST OF YOUR LIFE, simply because there aren't enough homes. Spend some time with the dogs that have been warehoused at a "No Kill" shelter then you will really know what behavioral problems are.

Just look up pet surrender and pure breed rescues. Before long you will find ones that even deal with animals that have behavioral problems. Their goal is to see if there is a medical or psychological reason behind the malady and if it can be corrected so that they can be readopted out and lead good lives in good homes, but the ones that can't be are kept by people in the organization who have special talents and big hearts-tho in the meantime you might want to see a vet to be sure of the problem source and a trainer to see if you can correct and keep your doxy yourself,

I'm sorry you had to resort to giving up your dog, but very glad that you see that humane Societies are not usually humane. I would search up either dachshund rescues or no kill shelters in you region or nearest big city..........
http://www.daretorescue.com/ is one site I found.....
Depending on the issue, maybe some training could fix the problem......
Best of luck
