Depending on when you go. If you are going during the summer months, you'll want to bring mosquito repellent. I just got back from a trip from May to August and that was the main thing bad about China is getting bitten to death by mosquitoes. I must have had over thirty bites over the period of the couple of months. You go to sleep and the next day, you have like two more bites. Besides that, there aren't any other major bugs.

Not if you want to, when I went to Beijing and Chongqing I didn't need any. Try not to eat like a foreigner (KFC, McDonald's), I mean taste the local food When in Beijing try the Tea eggs and fried bread loaves with hot soy milk for breakfast it's great $2.00, also try the Peking duck I can't remember the name of the restaurant famous for it but if you ask I'm sure someone can tell you.

There is a Flea Market just past main tower at Tienanmen square, don't be afraid to haggle for better price.

Make sure you go to the bathroom before you go to any restaurants, most do not have bathrooms plus make sure you always carry toilet paper and plenty of bottled water.

In summer, in the cheaper hotels, there will definitely be mosquitos. If you're staying in mid- to high-priced hotels, don't worry. If you're staying in cheap places, ask them to provide a mosquito coil for your room. In really cheap places they probably won't do this but someone can direct you where to buy one in a shop outside. There are two types: a spiral kind that burns and a pellet kind that goes into an electric gadget that plugs into the wall and heats the pellet, causing the mosquito-repelling agent to diffuse into the room. These both work quite well and last all night. You can also by bug spray in China tho it might not last all night. Note that compressed-gas products are illegal to take on the airplane.

Yes. But you can buy it in China so I wouldn't worry too much. Beijing and Shanghai will have English labels.

(Most Chinese bugspray that I've seen is an oil substance in a skinny green bottle.)

I've been to all of those places, actually I've lived in Beijing and Shanghai, and I never once used the bug spray that I took with me.

If you go to the rural area, you probably will need it. When I went there when I was like 4, yeah I needed it because all the bugs were biting me and nobody else got bitten! I doubt you're like a kid so I wouldn't worry about it because by the time I was 12 no bugs bothered me. But then again I didn't go to the rural areas.

i have been to all those places. it was in the summer and it was very hot but i don't remember bugs being a problem. just a side note, you will find that as you move south how much less westernized it becomes. i spent a month there. the cities you listed are the ones i visited in addition to Hong Kong. it was a trip of a lifetime. you will see how much the rest of the world lives. eye opening. please email me when you get back to tell me what you thought.

hey! youre so lucky youre going to china!! i went there, and it was really fun. a lot of eye opening places to see and A LOT of great food to taste. (:

well anyway, i dont think you'll need bugspray. wherever theres a lot of little biting/stinging insects, i'll get bitten pretty badly. whenever i go to Taiwan i always get bitten half to death. but the time i went to china (spring time) i dont believe i got bitten at all. if i did, it was only a few small insignificant bites.

this answer is really vague (sorry!) but i hope you find an answer that can help you.

:)
