I want to give my parents a terrier or similar small sized dog but they live in an apartment building and don't want to upset the neighbours with a yapper.

maltese. don't bark much, dont shed, very cuddly;)

the best way to prevent a yapper is to pay enough attention...these small breeds tend to be people dogs, and require a lot of affection. otherwise they get yappy and miserable- making.

although i think all pekingese and pomeranians are nothing but furry footballs. horrible dogs;)

Find what motivates your dog. Some dogs do anything for food. Some dogs do anything for Toys. Some do anything for a good petting. Some do anything for only one type of food, like cheese, or hotdog. Some only have interest in training for 5 minutes at a time, and others can go for an hour. Figure out what your dog is willing to work for, and then work with her in sessions that are no longer than she can tolerate. How to train your dog properly https://tr.im/epOKw

Sign up for a dog obedience training class. It will not train your dog. It will give you training on how you can train your dog. Most people understand the idea of training, but there is a right and a wrong way to do it, and there is good and bad technique. Timing and consistency is very important, and it helps to have feedback of someone watching you who can help you improve your technique to get more efficient results with your dog.

However, she may be somewhat anxious around other dogs, sort of like the shy kid on the playground. She will benefit from continuing what you are doing as far as asking her to sit before entering, but there are more things along those lines that will help her to calmly go in and out of the dog park. She may also benefit from going in short bursts, or only when fewer dogs are present, or avoiding times when other dogs that make her nervous are present. Maybe she just plays loud - my brother's dog is this way - or maybe she is a dogpark bully - sorry it is possible. But more likely she is just a little anxious around new dogs and she wants to play but just doesn't quite know how to do that and still feel comfortable. Don't be surprised if your dog does not actually like the dog park, and maybe she would get more enjoyment and less stress out of simply going for a good walk somewhere else.

A wagging tail does not mean that your dog is happy or even comfortable with the situation. It means your dog is emotionally aroused. This could be a happy arousal, or it could be a nervous arousal, or it could be an aggressive arousal. Go youtube it, there are plenty of videos of 'vicious' dogs who are throwing a very aggressive fit of barking and snarling while their tail is wagging vigorously. Even police dogs who are not let off the leash to chase down a suspect can be lunging and barking and snarling, and their tails are still going.

My Schipperke (15 lbs at the most) didn't yap, but, like most small dogs, she was rather hyper. Any dog can be trained not to yap, but some are harder than others to train. Have you looked into getting an adult dog from a rescue? That way, you can pick one that doesn't bark excessively. Since it's an adult, the personality won't change.
Hope this helps!

There's a certain breed of dog, I believe it's called a Basenji? Something like that, anyways, it physically can't bark. They make weird yodeling noises instead, but they're not very vocal anyway. They're small-medium sized dogs. Also, a lot of people around where I live seem to have shi tzus and they don't seem to bark a lot either. Some of it depends on the personality and temperament of the individual dogs though.

Basenji....they either don't bark or can't bark, they are a medium size dog..25-35lbs. They are recommended as a good pet with proper "owner and dog" obedience training. Very cute too! P.S. Sometimes it's not the dog that is causing the barking, it's the lack of ability of the owners to train a dog properly. Good luck on your hunt.

Get a chihuahua, shorthaired.
Has been known to be a yapper but every dogs personality is different. Or try and chihahua, dingo cross.
Looks like a dingo, about the size of a terrier and can't bark.
But then again, you get a quiet dogs its less likely to bark, get an energetic mutt and you have to keep it entertained or it will bark.

CHINA suggested the miniature schnauzer but I have to STRONGLY DISAGREE. Apparently her daughter got very lucky because most terriers are yappers. I have done a lot of online research on the mini. schnauzers and I have one; he yaps a lot, although with proper training, the barking can be controlled. My friend has a boston terrier and maybe she also got lucky, but her dog only barks when someone knocks on the door. Like I said, she may have gotten lucky because most terriers are barkers. The best thing to do would be to do some research online. There's lots of free articles about lots of different breeds. Hope this helps.

any dog of any breed can and will bark from time to time. Best bet is to avoid those breeds with large reputations of barking or 'yapping', such as chihuahuas. The best idea for buying any dog is to find out what type of dog you can handle, its energy requirements, feeding, housing, general health, etc. Buy as puppies, and do not also go to a breeder for dogs, as most breeders breed for looks, not for personality or behavior.adlut dogs are generally set in their ways and can proove excessively stubborn to train out of habits you find undesirable. Buy any puppy, and i garantee you it will bark at least once. You just have to reaffirm the good behavior and ignoring their bad habit of barking, as they bark for attention-they get no attention from it, they will stop once they realize they do get attention when they are quiet. Don't yell at them to stop (if possible), as that is still attention, even if it's negative, and will do more to encourage them than break them of it. Collars to stop barking, regardless of the kind, while they may be helpful in smaller amounts, can be gotten used to by the dog, who will start to ignore their affects and bark anyway. Muzzles shoudl always be avoided during training as all this teaches them is they cannot bark with it on, so everytime its removed they will start barking thinking it is no okay for them to do so.

Whatever breed you get, i recommend a puppy, and a good deal of training with affection.

I own a puggle and she only barks when someone comes to the door. She loves to lay next to me a be petted and she can play with her toys by herself, I don't have to always play with her. She likes to be loved on. She weighs about 30 lbs. In case your wondering a puggle is a pug/beagle mix. Mine is registered through the United All Breed. I wouldn't trade my puggle for any other dog.
