I have four kids as well ..His favourite present was one year we made up a decorated small box each of vouchers for the week. Each had a promise or a favour with a message "This for you because...." Anything you like .. back massage, leaf raking , depending on the ages of the kids. Your gift could be up to your own imagination .. sometimes just the "I love you " notes cost nothing but tend to mean the most!

If he works - prepare a dinner party for him right after work without him knowing. Invite everyone who is close to him and let the kids make decorations to put all over the house. More than anything buy him a birthday card with all of the right sayings and let him know that you all love him very much.

You could give him a Surprise Birthday Party, with family and friends or just go out to a nice restaurant.
Organise a sitter for the evening and you take your hubby to his favourite place for dinner and then maybe check into a motel for the night, so he can have a birthday that he will never forget.

You can do Bologne Sandwiches to Lobster. Depending on your budget. Contact your local Culinary Arts School and see if you can solicit a culinary student or students to prepare a magnificent meal for your hubby. Of course you will need to furnish the food. You didn't say his or the kids ages but if the kids are young have them draw pictures and write something to him and frame them and wrap them. As for what you should get him- think about his most passionate passtime and find two things that have to do with that. Wrap one and give it to him when the kids give theirs and have the second hidden under your robe for him to find later.
