Warmth mainly. Newspaper is a very good insulation material, it is even used, shredded, for house cavity wall insulation.
If you happen to be reading the paper or magazine though, it is more likely to be attention seeking. They are not daft!

My family has had several cats through the years, and I think every one of them loves sitting on paper. I think it must be the texture / noise of the paper that draws them. My sister had a cat who loved hiding under a sheet of paper - didnt matter if it was just a sheet of paper or a doublepage newpaper sheet, but that was because he liked to hide. Have you noticed if you are reading o magazine or newspaper etc, and it's on a table, they will come and sit on it. That may be to get your attention. I do know that one cat loved heat and sat wherever it was warmest, and never sat on paper - maybe because it's cooler? Another cat seemed to generate his own heat and always sat on paper, tile, wood, etc, possibly to get cool. So there's my theories, whatever they're worth, good question by the way.

Hi there
I believe it's something to do with paper being a poor conductor of heat - hence the longer a cat sits on a newspaper or a magazine the warmer she or he will feel. (If you've ever done a market stall in winter it's a good idea, for the same reason, to take a few old newspapers to stand on!)
Some of ours also love to rip up paper of any kind - one very sadly missed puss called Felicity (she achieved the ripe old age of 18 before succumbing to cancer) once chewed up a cheque!
Bless 'em!
Hope this helps

overlook all those solutions approximately it being a heat spot. Our cat Muffin sits on our television stand and watches each and all of the action happening the television exhibit. categorised advertisements and nature classes look her favorites. The sounds coming from the television is additionally of pastime. provide your pets a sprint credit, they are smarter and a lot extra conscious then you definately would think of.

Firstly, if you're reading the newspaper/magazine, he'll sit on it so you can't read it anymore, and your attention will prob switch to him, and also, it's warm, paper absorbs the body heat and insulates. Mine does it too.

I once heard that cats dont get comfortable, not like humans anyway, if you think about it they are wild animals, always on alert. But maybe its becasue its what they know, i.e under cars on road etc, its a hard surface.

To keep his bum warm maybe? Because you have him well house trained? Why worry if it keeps your cusions/pillows clean? If it was me, I'd be more worried about the fleas!
Besides, maybe they're just 'voicing' their opinion of the content of the said newspapers and magazines? :)

What newspaper do you have? Cats are intelligent creatures. I'm betting he's thinking, "Oh, she's got that cap tabloid that I hate, again... so I'll just sit on it. Maybe she'll get the message."

My new kitten was doing the same thing so I asked the vet when I took her in for shots.
He said it is just because they like the sound paper makes when they jump or play on it.
Sounds weird, but that is what he said....lol

No they tend to sit there as a trick to just be like whatever in their own little world or they do it just to sit often if they might have to go to the bathroom
