I also went to public school during this time. During the 60s, public prayer occurred more often, generally before lunchtime, depending on the teacher, and at assemblies. During the 70's when I was in high school, there was no praying in class, but any assembly or ceremony was always opened with a prayer.

It probably depended on where you attended school. I am from the Bible Belt!!

My family moved from San Diego to Salt Lake City when I was in 3rd grade, which would have been around 1967. I remember being surprised when my new teacher opened the day with prayer. But that didn't last long. I think there wasn't prayer in 4th grade. It's quite possible that some teachers ignoring the law but were eventually forced to obey the law.
