Helps us expand vocabulary more easily by linking to words we already know.....makes speaking and writing more interesting and variable, instead of using the same word over and over....gives us choices if our brains are failing and we can't think of that one word....subtle differences in connotation make words work better in certain situations....

Because sometimes you want to say a word many times in the same sentence and that sounds funny. So you use synonyms.

Because!

Just being ornary!

As I told one writer it's to make your point about something in the here and now in a different way.

For example, let's say you were doing a war story and you wanted to have communists, but you didn't want to come out and make them communists, so you take theri keyword "Comrades" and you replace it with a similar, but different word.

An synomym...

Brothers

Brothers and Sisters

Associates

Kindred

See, now you can write a story and use taht word

It reeks of the common term or communist, but it isn't their word.

Kindred people

Kindred folk

Associates, we have come here today

It's just like saying

Comrades, we have come here today

In this case it gets you out of a bind, What if, in 5 years, communism is a non-entity.

YOu don't look hokey!

Synomyns are good for many situations.

In a Doctorial Dissertation you are EXPECTED to use PRECISE words and those are synomyms.

YOu look for the BEST most DESCRIPTIVE word to use.

That is what a synomym is about.
