In the online context, it is someone who is "trolling" for a response, any response.

They are people who want attention so will usually post the most controversial or insulting material in order to get that attention.

A troll is a person who deliberately tries to fire up the emotions of readers in the hopes of exciting some really reactionary remarks.

Of course, a troll is also an insult directed towards anyone whose question you dislike for any reason whatsoever.

Some people have difficulty telling the two apart.

I'm not sure, but I think I started this about 8 months ago when I introduced a question

"To all non-believers trolling here........................"

My actual thought was from the idea of dragging bait through water to catch a fish, which is called trolling, but apparently (even from the first answers I received) the definition took on a new life of it's own.

A troll as you see it here is a dirty old man only online to look for young girls. So if you add that to all the other answers here, you will get a more complete picture.

I think they eat billy goats.

Also, people who post obnoxious questions for the sake of getting people riled up, not because they actually hold the obnoxious views they are claiming to hold.
