Anything in dog food that you cannot identify from its name in the ingredients list is bad. Grains as the major ingredients (corn, wheat, etc.) is bad - major ingredients are listed first. The more of something in the food, the higher it is on the ingredients list. Animal digest - I cannot get a straight answer from any dog food company on what that is and neither can anybody I know. If the ingredients start out with meat as the first or second ingredient chances are it is a good product. Good dog food is expensive. The thing about chocolate, onions, raisins, grapes etc. is way overblown. The dog has to eat quite a bit for there to be a problem unless it is a very, very small dog. If a beagle eats a chocolate bar it will probably get diarrhea at the most. If your dog eats a wad of turkey stuffing and it has onions in it your dog will probably not even get gas from it. If your dog eats a whole large onion it will get sick. Don't be too overprotective and try not to give your dog anything that isn't made for dogs unless it is meat, fish, cheese, eggs or a similar natural food commonly eaten by carnivores. Some dogs lose their ability to digest dairy products so keep an eye on your dog as it gets older if you use cheese or any milk products as a treat.

theer are a lot of nasty things that can hurt dogs, one of the worst accidental posionings usually happen at christmas/yule etc however, ebcause people by mistletoe and poinsettas (sp?). Botht hese plants are EXTREMELY posionous, and while pretty, should definitely be kept out of households with pets and young children who may try to eat them. Also, another common household plant, the philodendreon (a large green hanging plant with spade shaped leaves that grow on vine like stems)is also quite harmful to animals who eat them. Cinnamon and chocolate should also be kept away from dogs and cats, as though these will not kill the animal (unless severely allergic), they will make them quite sick if ingested (dont worry, the smell of cinnamon and chocolate is harmless).

otherwise, keep pets away from antifreeze, as the sweet smella nd taste attracts them to drink it, so always discard such chemicals as car fluids and household cleaning chemicals including any and all rags/paper towels the chemical might be on, wisely.

this is just a short list, the best idea here is use your common sense-if you wouldn't let a 2 year old baby around it, don't let your
pets near it. If you need to keep it out of a 2 yr olds reach, keep it out of the reach of pets.

some mushrooms if they are poisionous, alluminum foil, chocolate- well its just hard for them to digest i suppose. now like, i have a golden retriever who has had chocolate many times (accidentaly) like when he steels food off the table and whatnot and it hasnt affected him at all. my maltipoo however would probably die from having it once because she is so small and has a weak metabolism compared to the golden retriever. so if you have a big dog its not as much of a worry. if you have a little dog, be reaaaally careful.

As said before, plants are a major part of the harm, but another thing is Pills.

Just because the pills are in a child proof bottle, doesn't mean its Dog and Cat proof. Many Dogs can chew through a pill bottle or case in a matter of seconds. So make sure they are quite out of reach, and take into consideration that dogs can stand on their hind legs, and cats can jump. So just because it isn't nessicarily close when they are on all 4s, make sure they can not jump from area to area to get to it, and make sure the dogs can't stand up high enough to reach it.

Second on the list is something that most pet owners do NOT know, and that is Vitamins and Minerals are also poisoness to animals in "High Doses". This means that it IS possible to over-dose your pet with as simple as things as Dog/Cat food/treats.
Though very unlikely, if you have a dog or cat that likes to eat NON-STOP you should regulate their feeding times, also be sure not to let your dog or cat eat TOO many dog treats as often times they do contain more vitamins and minerals then the average dog/cat food.

Dog can also get Salminila (Spelling) from Raw meats left out, and of course we should all know that little thing our parents have always told us when we had dogs as kids. "Make sure the chicken bones are down deep." Chicken bones are VERY dangerous as they are so small they can get caught or pucture your dog/cats esophagus.

Beer/wine/ and other alcoholic drinks, although not immediately poisoness, can cause damage. so make sure your pets don't get into a spilled batch of budweiser.

The list can go on and on, the best thing to do is "If you don't know, don't trust it." safest bet.

As for the Chocolate,

"Apparently dogs cant eat chocolate because there is a chemical or whatever in milk chocolate that speeds their heart rate. Since they all ready have a fast heart rate wich only gets faster when they play you dont want to feed him any chocolate. White chocolate and dark chocolate is okay. (from what I hear, though I wouldnt push it)"

Coming from a Vet,
"Chocolate contains a number of chemicals that are used to make it taste good. But the major thing is, that it chocolates of all forms contain Caffine in some percentages. Caffine is known to increase heart rates of all animals. For Humans, its not a big issue as it takes numberous amounts of chocolate to increase our heart rate to a dangerous level. However, for some dogs, mainly your toy and miniture breeds, 1 bar can cause a severe heart problem. Its a safe bet to keep dogs and cats away from chocolate No matter how big they are."

Also, as for the Animal Digestive, it is a Chemical that is placed in foods that is often found in bile. It is to help with the digestive process of the food, but it is also a key reason why many dogs have diahrea after eating certain brands (Gravy Train dog food is one of them.)

Grains are NOT harmful in a small enough dose. if they are a major ingredient, (as in on the top of the ingredient list.) avoid that brand, it if it is in the middle, good choice. First should ALWAYS be the meat. Dogs and Cats are mostly Carnivores, but they still need their grains.

People With Wolf Hybrids should look for the grain to be on the lower end of the ingredient lists as Wolves need much less grain then your normal breed dogs.

Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine that is toxic to dogs. It can and has caused death in dogs of all types and sizes. Here is a link to some other foods that are not safe for dogs.

just don't give them chocolate or bread...bread expands. as for plants, nothing like poison ivy/oak, and nothing that you have sprayed w/ pestisides.
