I'm not being funny but the place where I see birds go to die is my garden. My cat is like lightening and usually gets them. One exception to that rule is the magpie. These will actually come very close to my cat and taunt her. I call it poetic justice. And before you say put a bell on my cat, I cannot, since I got her to get rid of any other kind of prowlers in the garden. Is it less cruel than poison? I don't know but it's natural.

The archive of Ask Dr. Fox* offers a simple explanation of avian expiration:

"Birds, like many other creatures, will seek secluded, out-of-the way places when they're feeling sick. Sometimes, rest and seclusion help them heal. But if they die, very often they won't be found in their hideouts.

Of course, in nature, things work in a strange tandem. Predators, like cats and foxes, can usually seek out these hideouts for prey. And often, these predators will take the prey back to feed their young, which is why it's so rare to find the remains of dead birds."

They're eaten by cats. Each cat kills approximately seven birds per year in the UK. That works out at 50 million per year killed by cats. The others are killed under the wheels of vehicles

In cities they usually crash into windows. In the country they land in trees and die and fall to the ground.

If they don't get pancaked on the road some place, my guess is in a field or foresty areas.

One time we found a dead Harris's Sparrow beneath our bird feeders. It still had seed in its mouth. Creepy...

The weak ones are taken out by cats or wild animals. They are eaten and not a lot is left of them, except the feathers.
