I certainly would not use 2x4's for ramps, that would be extremely dangerous. And you can make jumps easily out of pvc, it will last MUCH longer than cardboard.
I made an AKC regulation course (except the tunnel of course). Jumps are really easy and I can whip them out quickly. The bases for weave poles can be tricky if you do not know how to weld. I used sawdust instead of sand on my contact equipment and it worked out very well! My equipment is better than most of the other schools in my area, and it is not to expensive to build.
There are some good plans online. I would join the yahoo group agility equipment, there are many good plans there as well as people to give advice.
You can do it!!!

Here's how to make some obstacles for your backyard dog agility course complete with jumps, a tunnel and a hoop of fire!
Actually, there's no fire. We just used flame coloured card instead, a much safer option for your pet!
.................................................................................................................
What you'll need:
- Cardboard boxes
- Cardboard tubes
- A hoop
- Coloured paint
- Paint brushes
- Scissors
- Coloured pieces of card
- Textas
- Glue or sticky tape
What you need to do:
To make a jump, you'll need 2 cardboard boxes and 1 tube.
1. Make sure the cardboard boxes are the same height.
2. Cut a hole in the side of each box. This is where your tube will slide in.
3. Now paint the boxes and tubes, and you can add red stripes to the tubes.
4. Once everything is dry, insert the tube into the holes in each box. Your jump is ready for action!
To make a "daredevil" hoop of fire, you'll need a hoop, some textas and coloured pieces of card.
1. Draw round your hoop onto the card.
2. Add flame shapes to the circle, cut them out and attach them to your hoop with glue or sticky tape.
To make a tunnel, you'll need cardboard boxes.
1. Open out the box so you can see all the way through it.
2. Paint it for decoration.
Now you're ready to set up your course. You could try having the tunnel first, followed by a jump and then the hoop of fire for a grand finale!

Why don't you try something like going to a playground where people throw soft balls (like dodgeball) at you or shoot paintballs at you? I think that wouldn't be a bad homemade agility obstacle course. You could always add things or challenges to make it harder. You can even change the terrain. Best wishes and take care.

Do you have a Pet Smart or PetCo in your area? This sounds like an excellent question for a sales rep. They might be able to help.
Otherwise, you may want to try a home improvement store. There might be someone there to help you get the supplies you need.

I am assuming its for a dog, but one thing you could do is set up a small obstacle course, like log jumps and have treats at the end as an incentive, or set up small holes so they have to run around the them and if they finih satisfactorily give them a treat.

You can use 2x4 boards as ramps, wood saw horses as jumps, plastic crawling tubes (made for children) as tunnels, etc. Just be creative. You can look for sample courses online perhaps on the American Kennel Club site.

I have heard of people that actually take their dogs to playgrounds that allow it and work the dogs through the slides, etc...
You can go online and look at pix of courses and then go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy PVC pipe to make your weaves and jumps.. Lumber, old tires and old bike tires help, too.
I posted some links that I hope help you...

ok agility is the ability to move quickly and easily. set up like an obsticle course in your back yard. start with like .. 8 tires lined up ( good luck finding 8 tires) and do that thing where you run through them... then set up something high that you have to jump over.... then like swim through your pool.... i dont know.. you sort of need equipment for stuff like that. just use your imagination and your yard.

Start with your goals and objectives, state your obstacles, your attributes and handicaps. Check with SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Exectutives) chapter in your area and see if they can offer any funding insight, business planning, ETC

Go to Fort Knox, and ask to see their obstacle course.
They make it with logs and rope, boards and old tires. See films like Private Benjamin, etc.
