I only ask because my mother in law allows my 2 year old to stand on a chair and watch food such as popcorn popping, i said I would rather him not and both her and my wife thought I was ridiculous. I prefer to err on the safe side myself.

The door has shielding which "should" protect you for the most part. However, the door could be leaky, especially on an old or damaged microwave. I wouldn't obsess about it, but it's common sense not to make a habit of standing there two inches from it the whole time it is cooking. As another answerer said, the intensity of the energy decreases rapidly with distance, so even several feet away is much better than being snuggled right up to it.

With a two year old I probably wouldn't have her stand that close, because you could get distracted or she could get over-interested and open the oven door and corn or steam could pop out etc. I know it's true with conventional methods too but microwave ovens look amazingly benign and the biggest risk is from burning with the food, not escaping microwaves. For kids of that age and popcorn, I think the safest is for an adult to operate an air-popper funneled to an oversize bowl so that they can see it expand and flow out. It's magical. Just my two cents from my own experience.

In short, and in answer to your question, I would think YES it's safe as far as microwaves are concerned, but it's just too easy to open and they see you doing that all the time. I am amazed actually that microwave ovens are installed so high in kitchens.

The older microwaves gave off more emf's(electro-motive force) when they were on. The newer ones are shielded better to protect you from the microwaves, which can cook you too, besides the food. I still turn it on and walk far away to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, a lot of cell phone companies have microwave equipment in neighborhoods. There are some streets where these or electric company transformers are located that are known as "cancer clusters" even tho these companies deny that they are unsafe.

The microwave's energry effects yours in such a way that your energy is decreased. It's not a serious problem though, however you can see the difference if you were to wear a special bead bracelette. My aunt has one, she used to work for the jewerlers and the beads help protect your body's energy from harmful energies like microwaves, tv's, city life, cell phones too. Using the cell phone too much can cause a tumor..... The molecules just disrupts your system making them jump and go crazy.... when your away from them, it goes back in balance. So your fine for the most part; I am.

Yes, as long as its not turned on while the oven door is open. The effects may not be felt at once, but the waves might have a long term effect on your organs.

Not safe. The further you are from it while it is on, the better as the radioactive waves decrease significantly per inch.

yep.
The coil that is in the glass is made so the microwaves cannot get through it. You have nothing to worry about.
