at all. The school is involved very much in trying to help but we are all kinda lost. He seems to be in a power struggle with the teacher and will not listen at all. Any ideas how to get him back on the right track and get the education he deserves?????

First is he on meds?

either way..try a change in diet...cut ALL red dye out of his diet, it causes ADHD to become worse.

then everyone has to be consistent in what they expect out of him and the rewards and punishments should be carried out at home and school.

Have they tried modifying his work. He may feel overwhelmed by the amount of work OR the work might be TOO easy for him and he needs more of a challenge. Either way these factors can cause severe frustration for a child with ADHD and then they begin to act out and/or "shut down" and stop working all together.

Does he have an IEP. If not, you should have them do a diagnostic test on him something like a Brigance or Woodcock Johnson . These will help see at what grade level he is working at and it will help to see if its the work being too much or not enough.

If the work is too overwhelming for him they can give him the same work just cut it down into chunks, having him do part now part later so that he isn't so overwhelmed by sitting down and seeing that he has 20 questions to answer, They often just focus on the amount of work so much that they cant get past that to do the work.

Perhaps talk to the school Psychologist she may be able to help in all of this

Has he been tested for hyperinsulinemia as well as ADHD? Sometimes high insulin and the other chemical imbalances it can cause can be responsible for behavior changes.

www.hufa.org has a symptoms list that can be due to low blood sugar.

I can only suspect, given the little I have read, that blood sugar plays a role in add and adhd cases.
