I am currently reading and studying Japanese for no apparent reason. If you are starting out with no exposure at all... I suggest "The idiots guide to Japanese" It comes with a CD and you can learn all of the dialect and sounds associated. I personally follw this up with watching the Kill Bill Series in Japanese with English subtitles. Let me know if this helps you. It also gives you a brief overvies of Katakana and Kanji.

Pimsleur's audio series on speaking Japanese is excellent. You can get it on CD and cassette. It's expensive, but just work through your local library to get a copy and work with it. If they don't have it, have them use Inter-Library Loan to get it.
