He probably wasn't in pain, but as with any death by asphyxiation, he probably had a subconcious realization he was not going to live, and his body must have fought for oxygen as he died, but I am sure it was not a pianful death. To get an idea of what he went through, take a deep breath, hold it, let it out slowly. When all the air is gone, do not breathe in until your body forces you to breathe in on it's own.

I am so sorry for your loss. I pray you will find the answers you are searching for regarding his death.
I do not beleive your nephew was in pain when he died. He obviously was a fighter and was likely just working for that final breath. The crying nosie was problably the air in his lungs escaping.
I do think you should seek some counseling for your grief. Best wishes for your healing.

he died in comfortable way his life was short.. remember no matter what illness anyone has .. when the time comes to leave the earth god takes away every illness from that person just few minutes before the death ,, so when Shane was about to leave he was all well and made him cry ..... I feel sorry he had only short life ,, my sympathy to you and all your family ,, in the end of the day god who creates he know what is the best for every one of us ..i can understand how you feel because it happened in front of you ..if i was in your place i probably feel the same ...just believe in god and feel that god taken him away not in pain but comfortable way ...may god send his beautiful soul to heaven ..

My sympathy to you...
I'm pretty sure he died comfortably. The morphine would have done away with any pain, he may have had. It's extremely difficult to watch a loved one die, but know in your heart, he's in a better place.

Well, I experienced someone older my grandmother died of something about her lungs and she was in great shape, though my mother (she's about to be in her 50s). Um... she would always bring up stories how helathy she was, and they made her comfortable in the hospital and stuff, but then slowly she just passed away.

An advice, you should talk with someone about it, worship her picture like a mini shrine, (Im Buddhist and stuff so... I think its really nice to see someone that you love, and pretend that she/he is there you know? Talk to the picture as if the person is alive, and imagine their voices iny our head. That helped my mom over-come stuff. WE believe in reincarnation.
