ok, here's a weird question!! ....
Ive been asking God for the baptism of the Holy Spirit (the ability to speak in tongues) and it hasn't happened yet. its been a long time now and i was wondering because sometimes i talk in my sleep and I was told that it sounds like gibberish or like I'm speaking in a different language.....

could it be that when I'm asleep my spirit feels free and not as controlled by the mind and flesh?? am i really speaking in tongues?? please help!

Probably not. You don't have to speak in tongues to be baptized by the Holy Spirit. If you ask for the Holy Spirit in your life, He'll come into your life. I asked God for the gift of tongues and I can only remember a handful of times that I'd been praying and then my prayer became so intense that I found myself praying in a language I did not know. I could not turn it off and on, like some people claim they can do. What is important is to pray and to worship in Spirit and in Truth, and if the Holy Spirit wants to manifest himself in the form of tongues- glory to God. And if He doesn't- well, still glory be to God.

God isn't a genie, He doesn't just give you gifts because you want them, there needs to be a reason to use that gift. Speaking in tongue is to get thru to people who speak another language, it isn't a game and its certainly not gibberish. Would there really be a point to speaking gibberish? Or to speaking in tongue to nobody while you're sleeping? No, of course not, useless waste of a gift of God. At Pentacost, those that were given the gift of tongue, went out and preached to people in different countries, in their own language, so there was a point to it, it wasn't useless.

If you believe that this absolutely must happen as a sign of your conversion, then by definition you haven't been converted at this point. Keep praying.

However, if you ask other clergy or do a little research, there are other opinions out there that this happened only in the early church, and became less and less prevalent over time.

BTW, if you believe that you speak in tongues when you're asleep, have you considered that atheists probably do the same thing?

Its called sleep talking. Its your subconcious mind. Not you talking to god... unless your praying subconciously in which case you are. The ONLY people who got to speak in tongues were those in the bible who the Holy spirit came upon like a flame. Unless you have seen flying flames coming at you... its pretty safe to say no.

Christians seem to think that 'Speaking in Tongues' means babbling incoherently. It is actually a kind of induced hysteria.

In the bible, the 'gift of tongues' meant that anyone could understand your speech, no matter what language they spoke. For example, someone who had the 'gift of tongues' could be speaking to a crowd in Greek, and people who DID NOT UNDERSTAND Greek would hear and understand the speaker as if he were speaking in their own language... just like the 'babblefish' in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Of course, just like the 'babblefish', this is pure horseshit. It was horseshit in biblical times... it is horseshit now.

Speaking in tongues is a condition that is brought on by metal instability. The brain cells fire off out of control and the language centers of the brain run amok. You begin spouting out illegible words and thinking that God has touched your soul. Sorry but it is no miracle, it is natural.

Ever seen a person with Tourette's Syndrome? they do the same thing in a way, they spout out all kinds of sounds and words.

No.

Who told you, you were doing this?
How many people heard this?
What did they say, You specifically said?

To scriptural speak in tongues, there has to be 3 people and 1 has to interpret.

If this didn't happen this way......yep...you were "snoring" out loud.

You need to talk to your pastor or first lady of your church. At my church tonight, we are having a 'tarrying' service for those who wish to be filled with the Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit). I know of a friend who was speaking in tongues in her sleep, so what you said may be true...you may be you speaking in tongues! Pray for me.... I have been seeking the baptism of the Holy Ghost also and I have yet to speak in tongues! A young woman at my Church was filled a few weeks ago, and I got a little jealous.(spiritually). Your question just encouraged me to seek the Holy Ghost tonight with all me heart and might! Thank You, and I hope I answered your question somewhat!...P.S... Do you feel different? The young lady that I mentioned above said she just felt 'different'.(besides her speaking in tongues). I pray that you were filled and if you weren't like my pastor says..."Live like you are"! May God bless you!!!

Probably NOT.

Why would anyone want the LEAST of the gifts!
Will that make you more acceptable in your church?

The moment you accepted Jesus as The GOD you were filled by the Holy Spirit.
This Should Be Enough!
