I have obsessive compulsive disorder and suffer from religious obsessions. I have been dating my boyfriend for almost five years and plan on getting married to him. We are both Christians. However, for over a year I've been tortured with the thought that I'm going to hell if I marry him. I love him with all my heart and could not see myself without him. Do you think this thought is true or is it just my OCD?

1. Are both of you never-before-married?

2. Or if one or both of you are divorced, was it either because of sexual impurity on the part of your spouse, or because your spouse was an unbeliever and either left you or kicked you out?

3. Are you sure you are both believers?

If the answer to all three questions is 'Yes', then you are free to marry him and you should hold onto such Scriptures as Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:3-12; 1 Corinthians 7:10-15, 28, 39. Get to know these Scriptures well enough so that you can quote them from memory if you have any doubts in the future.

Also helpful will be verses about God's goodness and love:

The Lord is my light and my salvation -
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life -
Of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

Taste and see that the Lord is good;
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him. (Psalm 34:8)

Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed,
for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

And here's my favorite that I recite to myself when I'm afraid:

The Lord bless you and keep you
The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you
The Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)

It is just your OCD talking. Why don't you get some medicine that might clear up your thinking just a little? There are many different kinds out on the market and I am sure your doctor could probably help you and then your life will get a little better.

I would say it's probably the OCD, but that's just me.

Why are you thinking that you'll go to Hell for marrying him? Are you feeling like he may not be the right person for you, or is there something about him that just doesn't seem right?

its your OCD honey....you need to talk this out in therapy or get some meds. Your relationship with him is more then likely healthy and happy and you should be proud to marry a great man...dont be scared that you are going to go to hell because you want to marry him. Marriage is a happy union between two people who love each other....be happy.

good question. it really is. I think this is your ocd acting up. If you are not under age, why would you go to hell for marrying the man you love? Everybody deserves the right to ask questions, and have answers. and here's yours. I'm in love too. I can hardly breathe everytime he simply says hi to me in history. If you feel this way, you deserve him. 5 years is long enough. if he loves you, go for it!

I think that before you decide to get married, it would be wize to see a counselor of some sort... any marriage will not be healthy as long as one of the spouses are not healthy. And, no it is not going to land you in Hell if you marry the man that you are in love with...

In all instances of "gut feelings", you are most often doing the right thing by listening to yourself.
However, there is no reason, based on the limited info, that would cause you to be hell bound for marrying him.
I strongly urge you to discuss with clergy. Find someone with good references if possible.
God bless.

Of course it's not true. Salvation is for all who believe in Jesus and accept his blood sacrifice for our sins. Your fear is not from God. It may be due to your disorder or it may be part of a larger spiritual battle. Either way, the way to overcome it is to know your Bible better. Use the Bible to combat those fears. Focus on the truth. Knowing, understanding, and embracing the Bible is also what you need to help combat your OCD.

You will go to hell if you wind up dead without accepting Jesus as your personal saviour.

As for marrying your boyfriend, maybe you just feel guilty for having premarital sex with him. That is going to mess up your trust issues for a long time, but won't send you to hell.
