This is called DOMS -- delayed onset muscle soreness -- and it's perfectly normal when you're new to a certain exercise. Some things you can do:

A hot bath with epsom salts;
Ibuprophen;
A gentle massage;
Drink lots of water to flush the lactic acid out of your system;
One day of rest between exercising the same muscles;
Do a gentler version of the same movement to limber up the muscle.

Don't give up -- getting in shape is worth the intial discomfort, and if you stick with it you won't get sore as easily.

Take 500-1000 mg of citrus bioflavinoids with 1000 mg of vitamin C twice a day. Or, 100-300 mg of grapeseed extract or pycnogenol really helps those sore muscles to recover. Also, drink a lot of water. Hot tub will give some relief too. Eat as healthy a diet as you know how. Be sure to stretch well before and after exercise.
Good luck!

As long as it is just normal soreness and not a strain or pull, take Ibuprofen (Motrin) which is an Antinflammatory, take hot showers, and KEEP WORKING. If you stop lifting the pain will continue to happen everytime you return to your workout regimen. Keep at it, and within a few days/ weeks (depending) you will no longer be having muscle soreness.

Stretching out before and after you exercise. You should have a cooling down period after any strenuous activity. Otherwise, pop a aspirin or two and just remember the pain will be gone once you start training regularly.

eat bananas, it sounds dumb but it reduces the production of lactic acid, the burn you may feel, also strech before and after working out, btw its a good thing it means your muscles are breaking down then building up more than before
