Hi, I'm a Computer Science major... classes are very tough, and the semester which is basically a trimester, since it only lasts about 3 months goes very fast. The books for the classes are extremely thick and big. I've been trying to read them, but I just get way behind on everything. A chapter is about 60 pgs. Four clases make that about, 240 pages per week of not just leisure reading... but pages full of difficult concepts.

So, should I just forget about the reading and just focus on the main concepts taught in class?

Doing the reading, I get As in tests... but these courses also require a lot of projects, which I have no time because of the reading. So I end up with Bs, Cs, or even, Ds.

If I don't do the reading, I get Bs or Cs on the tests... but have time for the projects, which count as a test.

What should I do? do y'all read? I hear people always talking about what they read, and so on... are they just bragging?

Thanks.

I was a computer science major too and graduated last year (with honors) so I know what you are talking about. Focus on your projects. Skim the headings and definitions in your books if you don't have time to read the whole thing.

My last semester was my worst. I worked a full time job, was a full time student, and went through a divorce all at the same time. I spent the whole semester going to work, going to school, coming home, doing homework, and going to bed. I spent all weekend every weekend (about 18 to 20 hours) doing homework and projects. I didn't see the sun for 3 months. There was no social life for the whole 3 months.

You might have to bite the bullet and give up any social engagements for a few months. It won't last forever and it will be worth it!!

I never actually read all the chapters. Usually, I'll skim the required readings the night before the test. From what you've described, I'd skip the readings and do the projects--the key to college is prioritizing. Do whatever counts for the most points and is due first for any given class. (e.g. the reading is due before the project, but is worth zero points, while the project is worth 100. Do the project first.)

it is always bests to stay on top. you might want to consider time management so that you can do both. just a suggestion. but remember, going to college doesn't mean you put your life on hold and just be about the books. you need to be well rounded as well. good luck with you decision.

Take a speed reading class. You may be in over your head. Take fewer classes.
