Religion isn't even close to the search for truth. It is the search for security.

a basis for existence supported by guidance...i am not religious...but was raised in a way where i have experienced and viewed several religions openmindedly...however, i live my life based on respect, personal morals, the law, and am a giving and voluteering good samaritan, always treating evryone with respect without the fear of some devil or hell or even jail telling me how to be a good person nor the reward of a heaven or someones god or higher power, for my good deeds or faith. IT IS WHAT IT IS, it just depends on how you use it. there has been more WARS BASED ON RELIGION than any other cause in our world, because they are brought up saying my religion is better than yours or my god can kick your gods butt...who really gives a *@#$ in the end...all religions when broken down have the same final goal...be the best person you can be...i say believe in what you wish...and provide others the opportunity to do the same peacefully...we may not need it but its like chocolate and viagra...some people need it...some dont. if it makes them a better person...let them enjoy it...life is too short to take to serious...and its not permanent...just live it well, and not at the expense of another. some may say its a fairytale..la de da..but they may be refering to parts or tools of a religeon..i.e. the bible...now the bible is a source of records or a "tool" which depicts certain events for reference, as does the criminal and civil law books. you see, religion has been around long before any legal entities or police, so in a way it might be viewed as the first criminal justice system, i.e. if your bad, god sends you to hell or the judge sends you to jail...see the similarity...all the other stuff is like case law...adam and eve ate the fruit against gods will, and were punished...johnny drove drunk last week, and was punished...people tend to read read the languge of a religion other than the intent...in those days, things were more "fantasy" as we would say today, as this is what would get others attention, the unknown has always been the reason to explore or use caution...and this was their thought process back then...and people listened or they didnt...but then again they thought the world was flat too...get it...religion is basic, and like our constitution, must be reviewed as it applies to each incident, and it never has the absolute answer, only a simple guidline for people of similar ideas and interests. RELIGION IS LIKE THE LAW, IT CAN BE PERVERTED TO BENIFIT A PERSONS PERSONAL INTERESTS> USE CAUTION, DONT BE SUCKED IN, READ ABOUT JIM JONES, THE HAILY COMET GROUP. INVESTIGATE and EVALUATE.

The motivation for is a search for truth, and so is science. That's why all attempts to convince people that science and religion are not compatible will eventually cease. It's like streets in a city that appear parallel and never meet, but the geography, the reality of the situation, make the gap between them narrower and narrower until they meet.

Religion is a control mechanism that puts fear into the minds of people to make them conform to whatever the person delivering the laws wants. It also gives hope to some and makes some feel content, but religion will be the one thing that will divide us up more than ever before and change our world forever. It is clear that we are only at the very beginning of what will turn out to be the world's bloodiest war ever. A war that might rage on for centuries. A war that started with politics and now seeks to and has successfully used religion to ignite the passion of it's followers; makes you understand why Stalin banned RELIGION in Russia.

Maybe Buddhism is,,, Christianity, Judaism, Islam certainly are not. They aren't a search for anything... they are static, stagnant, dogmatic, institutionalized, codified delusion... incorporated. In the USA, at least, Christianity is the worst of the lot. It is essentially a criminal business enterprise... in fact, it is the world's longest running and most successful Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) scam. The product they are selling is the illusion of 'salvation'... and the 'pay plan' doesn't kick in until after you're dead. Meanwhile the VICTIMS (having been deceived into believing that it is their God-given duty) are out there busily recruiting MORE victims. What a racket! FORTUNATELY, it only works on those who are gullible enough, and sufficiently lacking in critical thinking skills, to fall for it, and buy in to the prepackaged delusion. UNfortunately, THAT accounts for about 75% of the population of the USA. (There are a lot more people who DON'T know how to think properly than there are people who DO know how to think properly.) That is why there are a lot more religious people in the USA than there are 'Free-thinkers'... including Atheists. Also, Christians are generally too dense to realize that proselytizing (spreading the 'good news') is a key element of the Christian MLM MARKETING PLAN, which was instituted after Christianity lost the political power that had previously allowed them to simply torture and kill anybody who did not comply. Now, they obliviously try to just pester and annoy people to death, through persistent obnoxiousness. If you stop to think about it, you will realize that Christians are very much like the Borg, on Star Trek Next Generation: "You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile." I would not be surprised to learn that thoughts of Christianity provided the 'creative spark' for the Borg concept.

If it were a search for truth it would use more scientific methods. You don't find the truth by faith alone. Granted that scientists have hunches, and sometimes they discover great things out of them. But if the hunch isn't backed up by objective evidence, it's not science. And it's not a search for truth.
How's "You've got to believe because the Bible tells you" for a search for truth?

I am sure that religion can be a spiritual path, a way to certain spiritual truths, but religion is mostly politically organised to control the population and stifle freedom.
The truth is all that there is to believe in, unfortunately we have been fed so many lies over the lifetime of mankind that the truth is well and truly buried.

Science is the search for truth, religion is "truth" that was created by ancestors who thought the world was flat and that disease was caused by demons. Trying to get truth from religion is like trying to squeeze custard out of a weasel's butt.

I believe, but it's still not a search for truth - if the truth could be demonstrated no one would need faith. It's the search for peace x

Sadly, you're probably serious.
Religion isn't "a search for truth". It's taking known falsehood and declaring it to be truth. Not at all the same thing.

Religion is in no way the search for truth. It is the creation of stories to explain things we don't yet know the truth for.
