good question.
I have an answer for you. Have a face to face with your helper and the boss. Put all the dirty laundry on the table and come with solutions. Get some type of contract (verbal or written) to evaluate the helpers performance over a specific short term period.

Remember a lazy employee is wasting company money, period. The company is loosing money not you.

Some suggested solutions: if helper is cooperative give him another chance, if he does not improve demand a replacement or his termination. Another solution is with your boss participation delegate specific responsibility of daily goals to evaluate performance. i.e. he must have this task from this point to that point completed to standard by the end of the day, if not, then demand his replacement.

If this guy gives you some grief or attempts to intimidate you document, document, document and make your boss aware that way if you loose your job you have a ground to stand on for unemployment.

Man up brother and grow some balls, its a dog e dog world out there. That helper is lucky I'm not his supervisor.

Threaten to take him to lunch at McDonald's on you. While this might sound advantageous to him, explain that at McDonald's you will order a X-Large order of fries and stab him in the eye with 4 hot french fries.

You were screwed from the get-go. This guy handed his cousin to you because he didn't want to deal with him anymore. He made his own problems go away by handing them to you.

You were doomed from the beginning. Move on.
