As others have hinted, it's because a bulb with a "standard" filament would fail the first time you opened the freezer door, because it would not be able to cope with going from -20 to +several hundred degrees in an instant.

You need a better quality, and therefore more expensive, bulb.

Years ago, this meant that only the most expensive freezers had a light in them. These days most of them do.

Haha - nice one.

We look in the fridge more often than the freezer. Also, there are more smaller items in the fridge to sort through and the light helps do this.

Cheap fridge?

I have a light in my freezer. Maybe your bulb is burnt out. The light bulb socket is harder to find in the freezer.

I used to wonder, too! Then I bought a house with a unit that has two lights in the fridge and one in the freezer. The place also came with a washer and drier and each of those has a light in it, too! And there's one in the oven and one in the microwave but, damn! . . . there's no light in the dishwasher!

A higher-end freezer will have a light bulb in it. It will have an appliance bulb in it which can handle more extreme changes in temperatures, etc. And yes... the light does go out when you close the door. :)

Hardly anyone raids the freezer at night time when the lights are off?

Freezer-Raiders are so stupid they will actually switch the kitchen light on!

(BTW some freezers do have lights in them!)

so you can have a R WHITE'S LEMONADE moment in the middle of the night .

( In Great Britain in the 1970s lemonade was not considered a glamorous product. This was deliberately parodied in a television commercial for R. White's lemonade, in which a man sneaks downstairs in his pajamas singing "I'm a secret lemonade drinker — I'm trying to give it up but it's one of those nights." When his wife catches him at the refrigerator he sheepishly offers her a glass. The commercial was a huge success and ran for almost a decade, although later attempts to revive the campaign were less successful)
