I got one for my dog at the vet. They're about $30. FYI - this is painful for them when they insert it, it's about the size of a grain of rice.

Hi Fiona...presently there is only GPS tracking collars for cats: http://www.environmental-studies.de/products/pet-tracking/Cat-tracking/cat-tracking.html. There are several companies who are experimentally designing GPS microchips for animals, but not available for purchase due to some big brother/civil issues: http://www.zeitenschrift.net/news/sne-27105-microchip.ihtml (See paragraph: £20 Identity Tag For Pets Microchip under the Skin of Every Dog and Cat in Britain )

You have to get your cat micro chipped at the vet because they inject it under the skin. But I don't think you can track the animal from that on a website but if he is found they can scan him and your info will show up. You could also try a harness instead of a collar. And if you get him fixed he should wander less plus it will stop any more unwanted kitties from being born.

No. Microchips are just for identification only!!! When scanned, ONLY a number comes up. You then call the company and they will contact the owner of the animal....the owner they have on file that is!!!!! They cannot "track" a pet. There is no GPS for pets!!! Do not believe anyone that says there is!!
I have all my pets chipped and I can tell you, you cannot track them!!!

It's an RFID chip embedded in a glass capsule, it has nothing to do with GPS. It's the same technology that retail stores use for inventory control (the scanners you walk through on the way out the door) It can only be read by a device in very close proximity to it. Vets & shelters have the readers, and will scan an animal when they are first given it. The hope is, that if your animal gets lost or stolen, a vet or shelter will ID the animal and return it to you.

I had my cat microchipped when he was being neutered so he didn't feel any discomfort. I can't track him but should he ever get out of the house he can be scanned at any vet or shelter and my info will come up so I can be contacted to come get him. The vet's info that does the procedure will also come up when he is scanned in case you can't be reached.

The chip you get from your vet is a personal catalog, meaning that it only stores your name and address and who the vet is that installed it. It can't track your pet but when a reading wand is waved over an animal with a chip it gives off that info. Many pounds and pet shelters return animals to the vets.
