First you need to turn it on and let it heat up for a minute or two. Then, while it is hot, you need to get a towel (get one thick enough that you won't burn your hands, but make sure it's one you don't care about staining.)

Put some rubbing alcohol on the towel and rub it down...it should come off, but you may have to keep reapplying.

Also, if the build up is really thick, you can use a razor blade to scrape it off. This will only work it the iron has ceramic plates though. If it doesn't, you will ruin it. If it doesn't have ceramic plates though, you are ruining your hair anyway and you should just toss the thing and buy one that does.

Avoid using the straightener when you have any product (gel, mousse, hairspray, etc) on your hair to prevent further build up.

Hope this helps!

The junk it likely burnt hair product, and if it won't come off with a wet cloth and some kind of soap, detergent, try scraping it off with something metal.

I would try vinegar and a washcloth or old rag. If that doesnt work and you think you need to scrape it.. dont scrape to hard.. I did that and ended up scraping some of the metal off and now I have to buy another straightner.
