I have heard that accidents and tickets will affect car insurance rates for five years. I was in an accident four years ago, that was determined to be my fault. Now, my (old) insurance company just settled this claim. Is this going to affect my rates for five years from the settlement date or from the date of the accident?

Thanks, Brad

It's the date of the accident.

Anywhere from 3 to five years. Depends on the company really and it is by the date of the accident

Our company tacked on a surcharge and took away our accident free discount for 3 years after a minor accident that was determined to be partially my husband's fault.

Which ever way they can get more money out of you. I thought it was 3 years, but it could be 5.
