if you brush your dog about every other day, you wont have as much hair to clean up.

ok been a groomer for 10 years. the new razor brush? crap. if u dont use it correctly/arent a proffesional u could end up with a bald dog. shaving ur dog will NOT stop the shedding it will just make the shedding hair shorter and will make ur dog look wierd. not to mention, and most groomers wont tell you this because they want the $$ but the coat might not grow back the same or at all!!!!also can be harmful for ur dog cause they can get sunburned pretty bad. the shedding wont stop because ur dog sheds its winter and summer coat but in between the serious molting it will lessen. to get it a little more under control get a shedding rake w/ short bristles and that will pull out the bigger shed and a rubber curry (can find in the horse section at pet store) for the little hair. best way is when ur bathing ur dog put on conditioner and brush with rake while rinsing trust me this works!!!!!!

German Shepherds have double coats - which means a lot of fur to shed. They 'blow' their coats twice a year with a constant 'lower level' of shedding in between. The best way to control the shedding is to take the dog to a groomer so they can wash out and brush out all the loose hair.
This is a reason people need to research breeds before getting one. If you cannot handle the shedding, don't get a dog with a double coat!!!

Here is something people don't usually know. Dogs and cats shed because of light. Hense the thicker coat in the winter. The days are shorter and so the dog naturally gets a thicker coat. Now in the home, if you keep the shades or curtains closed most on the time and don't use lights much, the dogs body will see that the light is less and get a thicker coat. But the dog has to go out to use the bathroom, so the light of the out side world makes the body react and they shed.

Groom, groom and groom some more. Shepherds shed. Keep your dog groomed, try brushing at least once a week. Normally a Shepherd will blow coat about twice a year. Mine have been blowing coat now. It starts coming out in clumps. Look here
http://www.total-german-shepherd.com/groomingtheGSD.html
I use a rake on most of mine, and also have a horse curry comb. My long coat girl does mat some on her tail and behind her ears, but she really does not shed any different than my regular coats. Even my old girl who has a coat that is not to standard. She really does not have the double coat. Her coat is very slick. She even sheds like everyone else here. There are some supplements that you can put on feed, linatone is one of them. Look here on Petedge http://www.petedge.com/sdx/H17029.jsp
Sardines as well can be fed to a Shepherd.

I had a similar problem w/ my Rottie - shedded like crazy....I discoverd that his diet was the bulk of the problem......Go buy a dog food that contains NO WHEAT, NO CORN, NO FILLERS.....mix the new dog food w/ the old for a week (to prevent dirarhea) and w/in a month you will discover a whole new animal under all that dead fur!!!
I'd been feeding my dog "Pedigree" and discovered that all the ingredients in Pedigree are all the ingredients you want to avoid. The guy at Petsmart said it's like Eating McDonalds every single day for 10 years.....
My dog now eats less, (which saves money) and is healthier w/ shiny hair and hardly any shedding, and even his bowel movements are smaller and firmer.....
I switched to Nature's Recipe w/ Lamb.....try it out or something similar but avoid any food w/ the crap ingredients) good luck

Is it an indoor/outdoor dog? if it is the constant chane in temperature will keep his coat shedding year around. It could also be the summer coat leaving and he is getting ready for winter. Did it recently go from hot to cold or cold to hot? That can sometimes cause dogs to shed at different times. I have a siberian husky and if the nights stay cold she will sometimes grow her winter coat only to shed it not long after because of hot days. Dogs are just weird like that sometimes.

You can't stop it but you can try to make it better. The metro dryer is great for shedding or the Mrs Allens Shed-stop. It could of course be cause of lack of nutrition's.

I have a female German Shepherd. You really cannot stop the shedding, but there are lots of things to help. GSD's "blow" their coat twice a year (spring and fall). Mine is begining to blow her coat now and I live in AZ.
I recommend you brush your dog with one of those basic wire brushes twice a week year round and when they blow their coat take them to get groomed and buzzed to about 1/4 of an inch. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME YOU SHOULD EVER BATHE YOUR DOG. GSD's skin runs out of oil and their skin will flake and bleed, it's already very sensitive, and it's very painful for them.
You should also add one tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil to your dog's food daily, this helps with the shedding and coats moister. Hope this helps!

Get rid of him- You can't stop the shedding just as you can't stop the hair growth.
There are some products you can buy that reduce shedding:
Shampoos
Oral remedies
Top coat for the food
They also have a new brush that looks like a razor. I havn't tried it yet but it looks pretty good...however is costs about 80 bucks!
Try www.drsfostersmith.com
You can also go extreme and shave him.
Good luck

You can't stop your dog from shedding, but you can hurry the process along by brushing your dog daily and bathing your dog in warm water before brushing.
