Can I check off Single on W4 if I am married. I filed married filing jointly last year with my wife. She also checked off Single on her W4. I do not want anyone to know my marital status.
Thank you

Of course they'll just with hold at a higher rate. Its going the other way claiming married and dependents when you have none that will get you in trouble.

Your employer only sends the W-4 to the IRS if you claim exempt or a large # of exemptions (14 last time I check). So, you may not get caught. If you want to family coverage on employer sponsered insurance, you will have to tell them you are married anyway. I wonder why you wish to hide your marital status. Outside of Human Resorces/Payroll, noone in the company can see the W-4 anyway.

I have to agree with Steven on most points. Why is being married a big deal? As Steven said, aside from payroll, whose going to know? It's not like they can tell everybody. Besides, I'm sure you're not the first married employee.

But to answer your question, yes you can.

Also, if you claim 10 or more exemptions on the W-4, your employer is no longer obligated to submit it to the IRS. However, the W-4 is still subject to review if deemed necessary.
