I'm a 13 yr old male, and wanna stengthen my body to play lineman in middle school football. What should I do to be tough enough to play before next year? I'm pretty husky (chubby, but still pretty strong). I need something I can do in my house or in my backyard. What are some good exercises, etc?

If you want to be strong all over (the kind of strong that keeps you standing on the field, heading toward the field goal even though the other players are hanging off your legs trying to pull you down) then you need to work on your "core muscles".

Your core muscles are the muscles from your hips all the way up to your chest. This area is also know as the "powerhouse". This area, if strengthened properly, will help your balance and overall strength and will be a great help on the field.

A 30 minute Pilates (pronounced Pi-lah-tees) DVD would be just the thing for you! Pilates won't build bulky, hulk size muscles though. Instead, you will build a secret strength, the kind that will suprise people and make them say, "Wow! I didn't know you could do that!" Pilates is an exercise that lots of professional sports playes do to strengthen themselves.

In addition to Pilates, start eating good healthy foods! If the food comes ready to eat in a box, bag, or carton or if you can heat n' eat from the microwave, then DON'T EAT IT! You want to eat good, clean, living foods that are full of energy and that will feed the muscles you want to strengthen. Also, get rid of the sodas, salty snacks and instead drink lots of water and fresh fruits and veggies for snacktime.

If you want to get rid of the "chubby", try walking/jogging about 1/2 hour everyday in addition to the Pilates.

If you want to build muscle too, get a couple of 3 to 5 pound weights and start pumping iron! www.bodybuilder.com has some exercise that you can do.

By following these steps and exercising faithfully, next year you should be just the player that you imagine you are right now!

Good luck! YOU CAN DO IT!
