No friends to back them up, smaller than others, very quiet, doesn't stand up for theirselves when something happens... or just being a "nerd".

People who are unsure of themselves, and don't really have a strong sense of self. If a person doesn't care what another person thinks, then would a bully accomplish by attacking them? Bullies pick on other people that them deem weak, because they feel like losers, and by picking on these people it makes them feel better. If a person stands up to the bully, the bully will usually run away, because the bully is pretty much a chicken. Also it could be because they get a reaction out of that person they're bullying, and they enjoy that reaction.
Basically if that person just doesn't care what that bully thinks or says, than the bully's job is pretty much obsolete.

In my opinion it is one of two things. Sometimes people who are sensitive or "easy targets" exude that type of vulnerability. I have dealt with that myself.I tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve and "bullys" can typically sniff that out of someone. Another possibility is jealousy. If someone feels jealousy towards another they might resolve to bullying that person.I use to teach middle school and their were always fights. I finally sat down with my kids and asked them why..the biggest response I got was jealousy.

Maybe looks, actions, talking. Anything out of the ordinary about someone. Or, the bully sees the victim as being defenseless.

people who have physical defects, or talk weird, look weird... people who are different and who are quiet. they are the ones who are scared to speak up, embarrased of the way they look, and scard to defent themselves. sometimes nerds are made fun of...those people who always answer, who are best friends with the teacher. those with different accents also get bullied.

Most bullies do what they do because they have low self-esteem issues. If they sense weakness in you, they will harass you.
