how can I make a hair band (like the messy bun with hairband style) at home instead of buying one

I like to cut off the band (the bottom) of old t-shirts and use that as a hairband. Sometimes I alter the shirt so I can still wear (i.e. make it into a tie cardigan, and wear a tank underneath) it and than I have a matiching hair band too!
