i've seen a couple questions today regarding the cross, you know the one. do you think it's good to focus on such a negative thing? by negative i mean your saviour was nailed to it and i'm sure it wasn't a happy time in his life.

I think the sad thing is too many focus on the cross, but lack the focus of the words taught by the man who was crucified.

See, the thing about the teachings of Jesus, are not just religion in origin. Most of it is common sense.

Especially the saying which was inspired by Jesus' teachings, but Incorporated into a saying which can be completely removed from Religion and stand on it's own. That saying is; "treat others as you would like to be treated"

What a great question!
The lead in to your question drew me in!
You are right it was not a happy time in His life.
In fact, He begged His Father to let this cup pass.
But, in the next sentence He said not my will but yours be done.
All of this seems so foolish to the wise.
It is however, salvation to those who believe.
As christians, it would actually be a GOOD thing to look at our
lives more often through the eyes of suffering and the cross.
But dont worry about me, I wont try to talk you into anything you dont want to believe.
Best wishes,
=)

the reason people focus on it is because of what it did for us as Christians... Jesus chose to die on that cross. i mean, if he could heal lepers, he certainly had the power to keep people away from him, too. it even says in the Bible that in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus was betrayed by Judas, the soldiers asked him if he was Jesus and he said two words: "I am." this phrase has a lot of meaning if you've any research on christianity or judiasm. at the words, "i am," the whole group of soldiers fell flat on their faces. (so he could have gotten away if he wanted to... but then he wouldn't be the Savior!)

i think (now, this is purely opinion) that Jesus was thinking of us while he was up there... we were the reason he was there... the reason he came to the earth. i think he pictured everyone he would save by doing this... and i believe that if he came into the world and only one person accepted him, he still would have died on that cross.

you aren't wrong for thinking that though... wearing crosses around our necks is kind of like wearing little guillotines or something. but it wasn't just your average crucifixion. people don't normally come back after being dead for three days, either.

i personally kind of think we should some up with a symbol of him raising from the dead... but a big stone rolled away from a tomb's not as simple a design as a cross is, either...

The Bible says, "Jesus, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross despising the shame and has sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high." Christ never taught the importance of happiness, but the fulfillment of Joy.

By the way he Bible does not teach the wearing or worship of a cross, it teaches that we are not to make any graven images of anything in heaven or on earth. Crosses really came out of catholocism and many churches still follow the Bible and don't make or wear crosses or anything else.

I agree why wear a reminder of his suffering? I agree with the person yesterday who say "If Jesus died of testicular cancer what would you wear around your neck". It may be a gross thought but it kinda makes you think ya know?
If you can't remember all he did for mankind without a daily visual reminder of his suffering then you might need to look deeper for more faith.
Not trying to offend anyone, just an opinion.

I'm not a Christian, and I've never fully understood the idea of worshiping the way in which one's prophet died. Especially not when the fish symbol is far more meaningful (I think, from the point of view of one who has never been a Christian, but has studied the religion).

Thousands of people were crucified, but only Jesus performed the miracle of the fishes and the loaves.

Thats a good question. I am definately a religious person , I appreciate that Jesus died for our sins but I don't wear the cross for various reasons....I guess it can be illustrated this way "If your loved one got shot, would you wear a gun around your neck to remember that you love them and how much you care about them."??

Sedition was a serious crime to the Romans, they tortured people to death on a cross Around the time of the reported crucifixion, the X cross was used, so the symbol should be an "X" not a +. Silly Xians can't even get their mythology to fit history.... Tsk Tsk.

How is that offensive or insensitive?

It all depends on what the cross means to the person who is focussing on it. Obviously.
I doubt the people are thinking of death and gore but even if they are it won't be in that way it will be in an appreciative way. Recognising his great sacrifice etc.

Could have been worse, they could have nailed him to a dodecahedron and Catholic mass would have ended up sounding like a helicopter pad as they all made that sign with their hands.
