How do I tell my mom that I want to be a sniper in the USMC? She says that I HAVE to go in as an officer, but i am pretty sure that snipers are only enlisted. If you knew my mom, then you would know how hard this is. Please help!

The main thing is the killing part, all moms hate that.

You want to face the enemy but you can't face your mom? Come on, man. The marines would eat you alive.

If your mom says you have to go in as an officer, then I hope you have a plan in place to go through college ROTC or Officers Candidate School. As far as I know, that is the only way to go in as an officer. On the other hand, even if you want to be a sniper, you will have to be well qualified for that position. You will be required to take the ASVAB test before joining any branch of the military. Your score on that test will show what MOS you are most qualified for. Even if you are highly qualified to be a sniper, the Marines still have the last say on which job you will end up with.

On a personal note, if you are afraid to tell your mom what you really want to be in the Marines, then how can you expect to be a good candidate to be a sniper? I would think the word "afraid" doesn't belong in the vocabulary of a warrior.

Son, you can want to be Superman if that makes you happy. The bottom line is, if your shooting skills are not in the top 2%, your not going to be a sniper. And it's actually called Scout/Sniper. If your mom has a problem with you killing, why are you joining the Marine Corps? Every Marine is a rifleman, thus every Marine is a sniper, just some get the title, and others dont. It is easier to become president than it is to be a Marine sniper. Can you control your breathing and heart rate? Can you stay completely still for 4 or more hours? Can you force yourself to not blink for three minutes? Most importantly, do you have it in your heart to sight in on a human being, be able to look directly into his eyes, knowing that he doesnt know your there, and can't defend himself, and put one bullet through his skull with no hesitation? With no remorse. When your a sniper, there arent any people, any human beings, only potential targets. It takes a real special person to be able to do that. If your afraid of what your momma is going to say, your not it. It's easy to put a bullet into a bulls eye at 1000 yards. It's not so easy sleeping at night when the bulls eye is alive. Think about it.

You are going to have to make some rough decisions on your own before breaking the news to your Mom.

You have got to want more than anything to be a Marine. That means taking the job "they" determine you are fit for. Only command will have say in what area of training you will be placed in. If your goal is special forces, be prepared mentally and physically to work your butt off for years to even be considered. Keep in mind that 90% of Special Forces members time is spent training. Most see one or two missions a year.

Being a Navy Mother of a Ordinance Unit member on an Aircraft Carrier, I will tell you one thing...If she sees the Honor, Courage, and Commitment in your eyes and attitude, it will be difficult, but She may see things your way.

Please remember with care that this is the one person who wants the best for you, but also wants you to live a full life and grow old with the one you love. It's not an unreasonable request from Her. Give your Mom time to deal with her heartfelt fears for you. I think She may be like I was, and end up being your most loyal supporter.

theres actually a good chance you'd not get sniper, the acceptance and pass rate is not that good. If you DIDN'T make it, you'd then be stuck serving out four years in a job you didn't want. If you want my advice, go in as an officer in a field you like if at all possible. Better pay, more autonomy, and more options. Listen to your mother in this case

a sniper does not go in as an officer, during basic training they will see how good of a shot u are. If you are that good it's on your records for each base and then u go to competition's then if u win u go to sniper school.

You are young and you think the adventure is cool........

It is entirely different after you put another human being in the cross hairs and pull the trigger.........

Most every young man that wants to join wants to see combat.......

Most every combat vet that I know wishes he were never there.......

Don't be fooled by the glory. It is not there. It is a phantom that will disappear with experience.....

If that is the job you want to do, then go for it. There is VERY little call for killing machines in the civilian workplace. You might want to consider an MOS with a little more future in it.

Weigh your options carefully. Killing is not glorious. Neither is dying. Sometimes, both must be done by our young warriors. There is no glory in it. If you go for your dream and get your dream you will wonder why you dreamed of something you may wish you never did.

Good luck.

Even through I don't know your mom, I feel that I know that any mom wants what's best for her child. And you should be honest with her , go to her and ask her to listen before she answers and explain your situation to her and really emphasize how important this is to you. See if this wont mellow her out some

If you are going to be a sniper, be a sniper. If you go in to the service doing what your mother wants, you will wash out.
