I'd pray for a swift death, if they were in pain, regardles of what I believe about the afterlife. I've seen far too many people live for months in horrible pain because their families wanted them to not die.

I think it really depends on the situation. Say your spouse is on their death-bed. You don't want them to die, so you pray they live. It's almost selfish...but it makes alot of the pain go away. the thing I've learned in life is that not all the are answered. It's not because God does not care. He does. And He determines why. If the spouse is going to suffer or can't function perfectly anymore, and they end up leaving this life, isn't that better? And whereas there is hurt, you don't feel like you did absolutely nothing to help.

Prayer is tricky, because people assume that it works like wishes. God isn't a genie. Problems arise that sometimes have to be lived through rather than wishing away. God is still there. It's a comfort rather than a request.

Furthermore, wouldnt praying to keep someone alive be contrary to God's wishes? God apparently knows all about us - our lives are "written in his book" - therefore prayer must be a waste of time too.....

The Bible tells us to pray for the sick and lay hands on them. I guess if you are sure that that person wants to die and go with the Lord fine, but if his work on earth is not complete, then what the use. Get better and complete the mission.

Depends on the circumstances of course, but the Bible does say that there is a sickness unto death and we do not need to pray for continuation.

My grandmother died two days ago. I think that if a person is in a lot of physical pain, and there is no chance of recovery, then it is pure selfishness to want them to stay alive. People must learn to let go.

that's a very good point. people are selfish by nature, and i think that's what it is. they realize that the person would be with God when they died, and no longer in pain, yet they feel as if they need the person and aren't ready for them to go yet. whether or not you realize they're in heaven, it still hurts that they're gone.

at the same time, though, it's very comforting to know how happy they are in heaven and that they're preparing a place for you! :)

when my baby was sick, i prayed that God would let me keep her. I knew God would give her a better home than i ever will be able to, but i wanted her here with me. i'm glad that was His plan.

Of course, but we can't push the plans that God may have for them. Taking the place of God in our actions ALWAYS has a bad outcome.
