NO question about it that I'm going to adopt from the SPCA but I'm in the middle of waiting for an Abyssinian cat/kit to appear at the shelter. I already have a 2 yr. old spayed female cat who is a little used to being the only cat of the household. she's been with her brother before and my parents new kitten (both were neutered). so she really has no problem warming up to a new addition. I have the money and time for a new cat but should I adopt one now or not? should I adopt a male or female? either way, he/she WILL be spayed/neutered. my female is strictly an indoor only cat and so will my new Aby. my 2 yr. old is well up to date on all her vaccinations and is very healthy rigth now. my new kitty will be up to date as well. so, should I adopt now? from experience I know that she won't have much trouble him/her but I'm not sure if the new comer will have a problem with her or not? since that is questionable, should I go ahead and get a kitten instead? Thanks!

Thanks soooooo much for all your questions!! I begininning to think about not even waiting for an Aby and just find a kit/cat that's been sitting there for awhile!! my parents adopted their male kitten from our SPCA about 3 months ago and I went with my mom to go get him! I just hated seeing all the homeless cats/kits there just laying in those cages not knowing their fate!!! it really sickened me!! any pet that I will ever own will come from the SPCA of Texas!! where I live.

I say definitey get another kitty! Get a boy whose a little younger than yours - boys and girls get along well. Although I love kittens, I always feel sorry for the older cats at the SPCA because so many people think that they won't adjust as well as kittens to a new environment.

As your girl is quite alright with other cats, this is what I suggest when you are at the shelter. If you like one, take him out of his cage, and put him next to the cage next door to see what the reaction is to another kitty. I did this when I went to get my second, and she just walked up to the mesh and tried to have a good sniff at the other cat. So I knew that she wasn't going to be afraid or try and fight with my boy. They've been together a month now - and I can't believe it took me so long to get him a friend, he's so much happier now (and has lost a little weight too!)

Congratuations on wanting to do this!

Oh yes you should do it! I just added a new cat to my household (I already have 2 cats so now it's 3) and yeah it's a bit tough at first with the adjustment to the other kitties but it will be well worth it if you save a cats life. If choosing a male be cautious of spraying. A kitten will adapt quicker but in most cases after a few weeks they will be buddies no matter what the age is. When requesting a specific breed do some checking on the personalities these breeds have. see the site http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/abyssinian.html

I foster for my animal shelter, think about doing that while you wait for the Aby. (you can help many animals this way instead of just 1.) Also, your wait may be rather long if you are waiting for an Aby. Check petfinders. com or look online for an Aby rescue group. Also, comtact breeders about one. Sometimes they have retired stud or queens that can be placed aspets for a much lower cost than a kitten. The odds of getting a purebred Aby from the shelter, especially if you are wanting a kitten are almost impossible. Abys are expencive cats (but well worth the money) and they very rarey are given to shelters. Most are sold on line or to kitten mills, so your wait may be really long. I waited 3 years when I was looking to rescue a Bengal. I got very lucky with mine, the lady was moving across country and couldn't take the babies with her, so she sold them cheep.

Good luck with your new cat when you get him/her.

Get whatever one suits you, we have a 13 year old cat and a 6 month old cat. They are bound to hiss and spat at first because that is their nature. The best way to get it over with is to show your 2 year old cat to the new cat. Let them see eachother face to face. It may get hairy, but they will have to get used to eachother. Also if you don't adopt, they get put down, I'm an advicate of animal adoption and I think it's great that your even thinking about adopting a cat. Good for you, go for it!!!!!

i have 5 cats and i love them all, some i got as strays and one i purchased, and another was given to me by someone that was going to put it to sleep, each time i brought a new one in the home , it would be difficult for them and there was some hissing, but now they are all great playmates, i say get a kitten and adopt a full grown, its great that you are preventing an unwanted cat from an untimely death.

Yes, adopt another. If you have the time, room and finance for another one, I say go for it. They may have a few weeks of spats trying to get used to each other, but your kitty now may love a feline friend to romp with.

I would go with a neutered male, but you go with whatever cat steals your heart.

You should if you are positive you have time and you want one... I'm sure if you get a kitten it will get along great with your older cat. If you get a cat it might be best to get a male they seem to get along better with other female cats because they don't get as jealous
good luck!

of course you should! there are so many animals being put to death because they don't have homes to go to. i have 2 cats and am very thankful that they have each other for the times when i am away from home. it may take both of them a while to adjust, but if you are patient they will learn to love the new arrangement

Cats are social creatures and enjoy each other's company after a period of turf war. Why wait? There are so many cats to love.
