Catholic here.

Popes are chosen for a variety of reasons. Experience, great faith, wisdom. Thus, elder Popes are chosen.

The Popes are not politicians, and don't need to fly around everywhere trying to get out a political message. The Popes do travel, but nothing like a President. The Holy Father communicates to his church through letters, etc.

Peace be with you.
