Yes, traditionally Mrs. stayed Mrs. Things are more flexible now since "Ms." came about. I'm divorced, and go by Ms. This has become an acceptable alternative, and can be used by married, single, or divorced women alike.

Traditionally, it has been as follows;

Miss Mary Jones marries Mr John Smith.

She is then Mrs. John Smith
After the divorce she becomes Mrs. Mary Smith

Most, nowadays opt for Ms. or taking back the maiden name. Unless she had a last name like McGillicuddy or Dorkface or some such as she was teased about. Or unless there is considerable alimony involved, and she wants to keep the connection. Some women will keep the husband's last name to keep the same name as the children also.

I kept my maiden name when married because I am degreed on the doctorate level and had built my profession already. It is amazing to me how confusing this still is to schools, insurance companies etc. When it came time to change the insurance, it took many phone calls and explanations. What is with these people, what century are they working from?

I am divorced and not a Mrs. I returned to my maiden name. I don't feel like a miss and am no longer a Mrs. so I choose Ms. if I have to provide a choice. Otherwise I do not bother. You don't have to have any of them.

My understanding is that after a divorce you are now Ms., not Miss or Mrs..

,After my divorce I used Ms. When I signed my name because I don't think you are "legally" a Mrs. any more! I remarried and became a widow and even though I would still be considered "legally" married,even though my husband is deceased, I still use Ms, but I can still sign my papers Mrs. if I choose!

Nope. Mrs is only for the married. Ms is standardard for unmarried and not an ingenue. Guys are easy, it's Mr no matter what stage in life you're in. C'est la vie.

I didn't go by Mrs, after I divorced, I went by Ms. Then I changed my name back to my maiden name as soon as possible as I didn't want to be affiliated with that mans family nor him anymore!

If you keep your married name, you can keep Mrs. You could also be a Ms. with either the married name or the maiden name.
