For the same reason people dump food on their plates, take it to the table, and begin to eat. You need to separate the food you are going to eat from the main supply, and you can't eat it all in one giant gulp!

I have had 3 dogs throughout my lifetime- and every single one of them has done the exact same thing. Whenever i go to my cousins house, or my friends house i usually witness their dogs carrying their food off into the other room as well. As you know- dogs are really sociable and lovable by nature, and they just want to be around you as much as they can. They do it so they can be near you (or other people) when they eat. Believe it or not, dogs also get the same feeling of being left out that people do. If the living room is where you and your family spend most of your time- than that is where they will go. They just want to feel included. If your dog does this, than he probably also follows you around your house alot, right? It is the same pricipal. It is nothing to worry about; he just cares about you!

**Sometimes they even go into that same room when no one is there- simply out of habit and comfort of being there (where poeple usually are.) It's an animal behavior charactaristic.

Do you crawl into the cupboard or remove food before you eat it?

Is he supposed to be stupid, so if he shows signs of intelligence it has to be explained away?

Animals communicate and because we do not "get it", we say they are dumb. Arrogance is not intelligence, it is foolishness.

Dude you have a smart dog and this is what he has figured out to do to be comfortable while he eats.

Whats wrong with being a bit more open minded.

Your dog could be a real "Lassie".

He could also like the taste of the living room floor with his food.

Check for toxicity.

He is "carrying off the kill" and having fun savoring the prize of his hunt. By carrying it off to a nice safe place of his territory, he can enjoy it fully and also his conquered domain, your house, from his private lair. Most predatory animals do this, but as a pet, he is having fun pretending to be the big game hunter. When he comes back to the main kill, his bowl, for another hunt, call him over and take a piece of kibble and move it around in quick circles in front of him and fling it across the floor. He will chase it down, pounce on it, and shake it to kill it with extra vigor, and carry it off with his head and tail high up in the air in complete triumph! Good dog! =D

I don't know but one of mine does the same thing. The other one sits there with his head hovering over the bowl daring anyone to stick a face in his food till he's full. Maybe for the same reason we pop popcorn and sit in front of the TV with it instead of eating there in the kitchen.

Where she's bringing her food will tell you why. If she brings it to wherever you are, whether it's one mouthful at a time, or the whole bowl at once, she just wants to eat in your company. Since carrying food all over the house can be a messy business, the best solution is to just resign yourself to having her eat with you, and start feeding her wherever you commonly are at mealtimes.

It's a territorial thing... dogs associate the food bowl as a place where they're vulnerable to people stealing their goodies (especially since we have to refill it all the time, so we're hovering over it). My dog does the same thing.

It's a territorial thing with dogs, they have a place where they poo, pee, eat, sleep. I think your dog thinks that the food that you place on its bowl is for the whole family and that he should just take a few pieces of it just like what they do after hunting their prey, they divide it among themselves then go to their separate places to eat their share.
