if you're using it in brownies? I want to make instant mix brownies which call for veg. oil, but I only have olive oil at home.

Can I substitute it? Will it affect the taste?
And, if you really don't know please don't answer.

Thanks!

Olive oil is made from olives, which are the fruit of the olive tree, it is equivalent to any other vegetable oil. But there are two different types ...check if yours is "strong" or "soft".flavour. If it's the strong one, it has a distinctive olive smell and it will have a dark - greenish colour, the soft one is paler and has a more neutral smell.. The soft one would be fine.for brownies, If it's the strong kind, you'd better not use it, for they will taste a little odd. The strong one is great for salads, and frying foods...
(The extra virgin olive oil is the strongest type.)
P.S. If you have margarine, or unsalted butter you can melt the quantity equivalent to the amount of oil you need, and use that instead of the oil.

Olive oil has a much stronger flavor than regular vegetable or canola oil. If it's extra virgin olive oil, then definitely don't use it, your brownies will come out tasting very funny. If it's regular olive oil, then you might be able to get away with it, but I'd just head to the corner store and buy some oil. A better substitute would be any butter or margarine product - this includes Country Crock and stuff like that.

NO on the olive oil. It has a distinct flavor and would ruin blueberry muffins. You need to use a vegetable oil. Saffola oil would be fine -- it is often used in cooking at high temperatures because it does not burn (like for frying chicken), but it would work in you muffin recipe.

Olive oil has a distinctive if subtle flavor so someone who knew what it was could tell the difference, but otherwise it's ok. Some of my best recipes were made when I used what I had. In this case I might add a little more vanilla flavoring...and chocolate flavoring if you have it. If you don't, don't worry....You'll be fine!
Go for it!

You CAN make them with olive oil; just keep in mind that the more pronounced "olivey" flavour of the oil, the more you run the risk that this will be detected in the finished product. I'm sure whatever you use, the flavours of vanilla (usually in blueberry muffins) as well as the blueberries themselves will cover the olive flavour. Cheers!

It won't affect the taste I have used olive oil in baking before and I have not noticed a true difference.

it won't affect the taste but there is a difference between the two---veg oil is made from a blend of veggies including corn but olive is made from olives. veg oil can take a higher heating than olive oil --- go for it

My mom made brownies with olive oil and you could taste it. Everyone noticed that something was different. She had the green, extra virgin olive oil.
