Companion Animal means Pet. the new term Companion animal refers to the current trend in human-animal relationships to have an animal as a companion, and is an attempt to have people treat their pets with the respect that they would a human freind. it also refers to the job of the pet as a freind and not a working pet like seeing eye dogs, police dogs, or the birds they used to use in mines to detect poisonous gasses, or Farm cats whose job is to keep the mice out of the hay. etc. a companion animal is just what is says an animal which is for companionship. they can be trained to proform some tasks if needed. but they are not considered professional animals. just companions

in many cases companion animal refers to an animal that helps a disabled person. Like a seeing-eye dog for a blind person.

It is an AR term for pet. They are using it to end the term pet, which means owned. They would rather we were called 'guardians' of our 'companions' so then pets will have legal rights. NOT a good thing! It sounds all warm and fuzzy but its not.

it's a politically correct term for "pets." some organizations like PETA think that it's wrong to call them "pets." PETA is whacko, by the way, for many other reasons...
