i was watching a show on pbs and i saw a 4 star army general with a patch on his shoulder, is that his favorite division he likes or they one he served in or commanded.........

The basics first.The patch on the left shoulder is the unit or command they belong to.The patch on the right shoulder is the unit they served with during combat or in a combat zone.
Everone in the Army wears a patch on the left shoulder except the U.S. Army Chief of Staff.Since he represents the whole Army,he wears a Chief of Staff badge on the left breast pocket.
If you are awarded a combat patch, you are authorized to wear it no matter your rank or position.

That usually shows which Division he belongs too. They normally don't get to choose what Division patch they wear

Most likely he served in it if I remember. Also, if theres a "Ranger" Script Patch, he is a Ranger, or trained to be one, but went back to his unit.

the right shoulder is where they put combat patches
left shoulder is the unit patch.
