Yes, there is. Currently Consumer Reports and numerous other rating systems and groups out there rate Samsung ahead of Panasonic for plasma quality. Pioneer is the leader in overall quality, but their price is not worth the slight increase in picture quality. Also remember that with plasma, size does matter, but in inverse. The larger the screen generally the worse the picture.
I just did very similar research and ended up buying a 50" Samsung HDTV Plasma from Best Buy, and it is AWESOME! (My parents have a 42" Panasonic and you can see a difference between theirs and mine...the Samsung is definitely better).
