They are talking it up again tonight on CNN...claiming it is not fair to keep redeploying the same soldiers who have families. Are you ready if it happens? If not, what can you do about it?

As you are no doubt aware, Military Subscription (the Draft) was eliminated during the administration of President Carter back in the 1970's.

The military operates on an all voluntary force, and although we are told that enlistments are"down" recruiters are turning applicants away.

The military therefore has a finite number of bodies in the manpower pool from which to draw. Since various Presidents over the years have committed American forces to different parts of the world for different reasons, it becomes necessary to deploy individual soldiers or sailors multiple times during the term of their military contract to fulfill all of the commitments.

Keep in mind that CNN was started by Ted Turner, Jane Fonda's ex. and its news reporting does have a bit of a "liberal" bias. The only good thing I found about CNN was Daryn Kagen, she is so HOT!, but that is a topic for another question.

This is an all volunteer force. You do not sign up with the military and not expect to get deployed. That is what they do, they have trained for it. Many volunteer to go back. I think CNN is being very irresponsible in their reporting and if they actually talked to the soldiers they would hear a different story. Our recruiting numbers are being met and some are being exceeded. So CNN in my opinion is way off base but that is nothing new from that gang.

I am in the Military and am against the Draft! At least in the form it took years ago. First off if we HAD to have a draft, I would recommend NO Deferments at all. All students currently enrolled in school to finish the semester then report. In the past kids whos parents had money could always keep them from serving by sending them to college... so only kids from poor familys got stuck in the draft... Don't get me wrong...many well to do people served.... but overwhelmingly they usually got out of it.

Thats one of the reasons I dont want the draft. The other is... I would rather serve with a smaller number who wanted to be here than a lot of people who don't...

It takes dedication to serve and people forced to do so are rarely dedicated to that level.

I finished college and, to beat the draft, I enlisted. Sound dumb? Not really - I had more choices of what I wanted to study plus I wanted to help protect my country (a little something called patriotism). This was during the Viet Nam fiasco. We came back to hatred, unlike today. I still think we should fight for our country.

well i wonder what kind of difference it will make to us ladies who want to join. will they be more reluctant to take us? and quite frankly, i think everyone should have to serve their country. everyone. put your time in. no it's not fair for those who are always being deployed while everyone else sits back and "watches" what happens. you know, if everyone had the attitude they didn't want to serve, then we would have NO ARMY AT ALL!!! thank goodness there are still some guys left with some backbone in this country. all the good men are overseas. and look at what's left. sad but true. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!! AND BRING HOME OUR TROOPS SAFELY!!!

Get it through your head... They are *NOT* going to *draft* people while they are *still* turning people *away* at the recruiting station! *OR* while they are booting people out for bs reasons like an extra pound or two, or inability to make rank (due to poor test taking skills, not performance)

No, because I'm enlisting - hopefully for 23 years.
I believe we need to reinstate National Service, for AT LEAST 9 months.

there isn't going to be a draft anytime soon. it would be total political suicide for whoever's party passed it in. as to being fair... it's not, but its our job and we signed up to do it. all we ask is that you support us while we're gone, and listen to us when we come back
